일제시대 자동차 디자인의 기초적 토대 형성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Basic Foundation for Automobile Design in the Japanese Colonial Period)

초록

배경 자동차는 도시화, 산업화와 더불어 한국의 디자인 발전에 크게 기여한 사물이다. 산업화의 주역으로서 자동차는 1960년대 이후의 성장과정에 그 역사적 의미가 집중되고, 디자인 역사 또한 이 시기 외국에서 기술을 도입하여 이룩한 발전에 초점을 두고 있다. 이러한 인식에서 자동차가 한국에 처음으로 들어와 일상적인 교통수단으로 정착한 일제시기에 대한연구는 상당히 미흡하다. 이 연구는 한국 자동차 디자인의 역사를 근대기로 확장하는 시각에 바탕을 두고, 자동차 공업과 디자인의 실질적인 토대가 형성되는 과정에 대해 고찰했다.
방법 연구 범위와 방법은 일제시기 자동차를 대상으로 하여, 경제, 산업, 기술 등 관련 선행자료를 살펴보고, 다양한 차량으로 확산되는 과정과 차량 제작에 관련된 여러 조건이 형성되는 배경 및 그 활동 사례에 관한 자료를 수집하여 진행하였다.
결과 한국의 자동차 공업은 일본이 조선에 근대적 제도와 기반 시설을 보급하는 과정에서시작되었으나, 실질적인 발전을 이룩하지 못했다. 실제적인 토대는 일제의 공업화 과정에능동적으로 대응하며 기술력을 쌓은 조선인의 노력으로 이루어졌고, 이러한 노력은 근대 디자인의 형성을 뒷받침했다. 당시 자동차 조립과 개조 활동은 디자인 사례로 가능성을 가지지만, 이 활동이 어느 정도 범위로, 어떠한 형태 변형을 가져왔는지에 대해서는 구체적으로확인하기 어려웠다. 단지 이 연구를 통해 주권을 잃은 식민지시기에도 삶의 변화와 진보를위해 노력한 역사가 있었으며, 그러한 증거로 디자인의 흔적을 확인할 수 있었다.
결론 이러한 역사는 해방 후 시대적 한계 속에서도 경제적 자립을 이룩하는 힘의 바탕이자,자동차 산업 발전과 디자인을 받쳐 주는 암묵적 지식으로 존재했다. 이 연구는 조선인의 능동적인 대응과 경험을 중시하며, 자동차 산업과 디자인의 역사를 해방 이전과 이후를 잇는연속적인 시각에서 파악하는 것이다.

영어초록

Background The car is an item that contributed greatly to the development ofKorean design together with urbanization and industrialization. Having a leading rolein industrialization, the car’s historic significance is concentrated in the process of itsgrowth since the 1960s. The design history also focuses on the development achievedby introducing foreign technology at that time. In this recognition, studies on the carsintroduced to Korea for the first time under the Japanese colonial period that were set asdaily means of transportation are insufficient. This study is based on the vision to extendthe history of Korean automobile design, and considers the course of formation for apractical foundation of the automobile industry and the design at that time.
Methods This study encompasses all types of cars including passenger-type vehicles,buses and trucks. While previous studies on the economy, the industry and thetechnology were researched, references on the formation of several conditions, itsbackground and design production activities accordingly related to the process ofdiffusion toward various cars and their manufacture were also collected.
Results The Korean automobile industry was started in the process of the spreadof modern institutions and infrastructures by Japan in the Joseon dynasty, but it wassubject to Japanese control and monopoly capital. Thus its substantial developmentwas not achieved because it was industrialization for Japan’s interests. The foundationof industrialization was established due to the efforts of Koreans who took this as anopportunity to accumulate the technology actively by responding to the industrializationprocess of Japan, and these efforts have supported the formation of a modern design.
Although the cars manufactured or modified in the Japanese colonial period may havebeen possible cases of design activity, it was difficult to identify the sufficient data on towhat extent and what kinds of modifications were attempted. However, we just foundthat there was a history of efforts to bring about change and make progress even duringthe colonial period, and traces of the design through such evidence in this study.
Conclusion We could verify that this kind of history reflects the desire of the Koreanpeople to pursue economic independence, and it was tacit knowledge that sustainedthe development of the automobile and the design within the limits of the era afterliberation. These study results were based on a perspective that emphasized the proactiveresponse of Koreans and the accumulation of experience, and identified the designhistory with a continuous viewpoint connecting the pre-and post-liberation periods.
