초록

≪이슬람 정육점≫은 다문화적 사유를 바탕으로 흉터와 외상, 이주로 점철된 소수자가 모여사는 다문화공동체를 구현하고 있다. 고아원, 보호소, 성당을 전전하며 기원을 알 수 없는 흉터를 간직한 전쟁고아인 ‘나’는 상처받은 영혼이다. 차별과 고통 속에서 성장한 고아소년은 터키인 하산에게 입양되면서 후락한 동네로 오게 된다. 이 마을에는 이주자, 폭력피해여성, 외상후 스트레스 장애자, 전쟁희생자, 가난한 자, 실연한 자, 소외된 자, 도망자 등이 모여 산다. 주변부 삶을 사는 마을사람들은 카니발 공간이자 타자의 공간인 다문화공간에서 여신, 성자, 상처치유자, 전쟁영웅, 초능력자로 재탄생되며, 소년도 상처를 간직한 사람들과 소통하며 의붓아버지를 아버지로 받아들이고 세상과 화해한다. 이 마을에서는 혈연이 아닌 흉터를 공유한 사람끼리 가족을 이루는 대안가족으로서의 다문화가족이 형성된다. 또한 자국민에게 버려진 아이를 입양하여 가족을 만들어주고 한국을 위해 전쟁에 참여하는 외국인 하산이 다르게 생겼다는 이유만으로 차별과 공포의 대상이 된다는 사실을 고발한다. 하산의 정육점, 안나의 식당인 타자의 공간에서는 탈영토화된 언어인 말더듬, 피진어, 침묵, 비속어, 반복어, 동물의 언어로 소통하며 병을 치유하고 음식을 나눔으로써 다문화적 자세를 지향하고 있다. 작가는 이 소설을 통해 타자적 입장에서 작품을 써야하며, 정치적이고 치유하는 역할이 우리 시대의 문학적 소명임을 말하고 있다. 작가의 꿈을 소망하는 전쟁고아와 말더듬이 소설가 김유정과 이름이 같은 유정의 입을 통해 문학관을 피력하는 작가는 아이-되기, 동물-되기와 같은 타자-되기를 실현한다. 이방인, 외국인처럼 어린아이의 시선은 작가가 주창하는 삶의 태도이자 창작적 관점이다. 1990년대 이후 동구권의 붕괴와 신자유주의 광풍과 세계화로 인해 길을 잃은 작가들에게 이 소설은 문학의 방향성을 제시하며, 다문화시대에 구획과 경계를 정하지 않고 끊임없이 유동하며 생성하는 차이생성의 문학을 주창한다. 실험적이고 정치적인 ≪이슬람 정육점≫은 우리 사회의 편향되고 획일적이며 반인권적인 자세를 비판하는 녹록치 않은 주제의식을 담고 있으면서도 유머, 동화적 분위기, 환상성, 아이러니, 재치있는 언어 구사로 재미있게 읽힌다는 점에서 문제작으로 평가할 수 있다.

영어초록

The Islamic Butcher Shop shows the life of a multicultural community basedon multicultural thinking. Its characters are minorities characterized by scars,traumas, and migration. The main character "I" is a war orphan and placedin many different places including the orphanage, shelter, and Catholic church.
He is a wounded soul with scars whose origins are unknown all over hisbody. Growing up in discrimination and pain, the orphan boy is adopted bya Turkish man named Hassan ad moves to a deteriorated town, which is themulticultural space of others. The residents of the town include immigrants,female victims to violence, people with the post-traumatic stress disorder,war victims, the poor, the heartbroken, the neglected, and fugitives. Livinga marginal life, the residents are reborn as goddesses, saints, wound healers,war heroes, and people with superhuman power in the carnival place. Theorphan boy communicates with the residents with a wound, accepts hisstepfather as his father, and reconciles with the world. In the town, amulticultural community is formed as an alternative family comprised ofpeople sharing wounds instead of blood ties. It also reports the reality in whichthe foreigner Hassan is subjected to discrimination and object of fear justbecause of his different appearance even though he is the one who adopteda child discarded by his fellow countrymen, made a family for him, andparticipated in the war for the nation. In the spaces of others where thereare Hassan's butcher shop and Anna's restaurant, they communicate indeterritorialized languages such as stuttering, pidgin, silence, slang, repeated words, and animal language. The author writes in the shoes of others andshows that the mission of literature is political and healing in our timesthrough the novel. The author expresses his literary view through the warorphan dreaming of becoming an author and the stuttering novelist who hasthe same name, Kim Yu-jeong, as the boy, implementing becoming otherslike becoming children and animals. The eyes of children like aliens andforeigners are the life attitude and creative views advocated by the author.
The novel proposes the directionality of novels that literature should pursueto authors that have lost a way due to the collapse of the East European bloc,raging wind of neo-liberalism, and globalization since the 1990s. It alsopromotes literature that defines no sects and boundaries, constantly movesaround, and creates differences in the multicultural, debordered age. Anexperimental and political novel, The Islamic Butcher Shop conveys grandthematic consciousness that criticizes the biased, uniform, and anti-humanright attitude of the society and delivers fun to the readers through humor,fairy tale-like atmosphere, fantasy, irony, and witty remarks, which focusesattention on it as an issue-making work.
