초록

본 논문은『維摩經』을 중심으로 淨土思想에 대해 살펴보려는 것이 다. 淨土에 대한 개념은 두 가지가 있다. 淸淨한 國土혹은 淨化된 國 土라는 뜻과 다른 하나는‘국토를 깨끗이 한다.’는 의미가 그것이다. 본 논문에서『유마경』의 정토사상을 이해하기 위해 분석한 것은 唯 心淨土觀·修行淨土觀·菩薩心淨土觀·他方淨土觀으로 구분할 수 있다. 그리고 대략적인 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유심정토관에서는 현실의 국토가 불국토라 본다. 불국토는 이상적인 것이 아니라 우리들이 현재 살고 있는 이곳이다. 「불국품」 에서“直心, 深心, 菩薩心이 보살의 정토이다.”“이 마음이 청정하면 불국토도 청정하다.”라고 하여, 정토라는 것은 그것을 실현하고자 하 는 보살의 실천정신 가운데 이미 표현되어 있다고 보는 것이다. 둘째 수행정토관에서는“보시·지계·인욕·정진·선정·지혜의 육바라밀, 자비심·동정심·환희심·평등심의 四無量心, 布施·愛 語·利行·同事의 四攝法, 방편, 四念處·四精勤·四如意足·五 根·五力·七覺支·八正道의 37助道品, 회향심, 三惡八難을 벗어나 도록 설법하는 것, 스스로 계행을 지키고 남의 허물을 비방하지 않는 것, 十善등.”의 이러한 行法들이 보살이 佛國土를 청정하게 하는 길 이며, 모든 중생을 정토에 태어나게 한다고 본다. 셋째, 보살심정토관에서는 정토를 취하는 것은 모든 중생을 위해서 다. “왜냐하면 보살이 정토를 취하는 것은 모든 중생을 이롭게 하기 위한 것이기 때문이다. 비유컨대 누가 빈터에 집을 짓고자 하면 뜻대 로 지을 수 있다. 그러나 만약 허공에 짓고자 한다면 끝내 지을 수 없 는 것과 같다. 보살도 이와 같아서 중생을 완성시키기 위하여 불국토 를 취하고자 하는 것이지 허공에다 만들고자 하는 것은 아니다.”중 생을 제도하려는 행위에 바탕하여 어떤 상황, 어떤 조건에서도 흔들림 없이 수행을 완성해 가는 대승적인 방편이 바로 정토건설의 방법 임을 나타낸 것이다. 넷째, 타방정토관에서는 이 세계로부터 멀리 떨어진 곳에 부처님이 계시는 정토가 있다고 생각하는 것이다. 즉 서방 또는 동방 등의 특 정한 방위에 정토가 존재한다고 밝히는 것과 시방에 정토가 있다고 하는 것이다. 청정한 불국토인 묘희국과 부동여래를 보여주자 사바 세계의 사람들은 아뇩다라삼먁삼보리에 대한 마음을 일으켰다. 모두 가 묘희라는 불국토에 태어나기를 원하였더니, 붓다는 곧 그들에게 ‘장차 그 나라에 태어날 것이다’라고 수기를 주었다고 하는 가르침에 서 알 수 있다. 『유마경』에는 나타난 정토는 우리가 현재 살고 있는 국토에서 청정 한 마음으로 행법을 지키며 수행하고 중생을 위해 제도하는 마음을 놓치지 않고 이상세계가 현실세계로 변화된다는 믿음이 있으면 불국 토를 완성한다고 설하는 것이 특징이다.

영어초록

The present thesis aims to investigate Pure Land doctrine mainly based on Vimalakirti Sutra. One of the two meanings of Pure Land(淨土) is a purified or sanctified land, and the other is to purify a land. To facilitate understanding of the Pure Land doctrine discussed in Vimalakirti Sutra, a summary thereof is provided as below. The Pure Land doctrine in Vimalakirti Sutra may be classified as the Pure Land perspectives on idealism (唯心淨土 觀), practice(修行淨土觀), Bodhisattva mind(菩薩心淨土觀), and otherworlds(他方淨土觀). Firstly, the Pure Land perspective on idealism considers that our real land is Buddha Land. Buddha Land is not an ideal one but where we are living today. The chapter of Buddha Land states, “Right mind, high resolve, and bodhisattva mind are the Pure Land of Bodhisattva”and“ If this mind is pure, then Buddha Land is also pure.”This means that the real land is the Pure Land as it is already expressed in the practice spirit of Bodhisattva who intends to realize it. Secondly, according to the Pure Land perspective on practice, “ Generosity, discipline, patience, effort, contemplation, and wisdom of the Six Perfections(六波羅密); benevolence, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity of the Four Immeasurables(四無量心); charity, kind words, altruistic behavior, and skillful means amicable association of the Four Expedient Means(四攝法); four foci of mindfulness(四 念處), four right efforts(四精勤), four bases of magical powers (四如意足), five spiritual faculties(五根), five powers(五力), seven factors of enlightenment(七覺支), and eight branches of the holy path(八正道) of the Thirty-Seven Aids(37助道品); dedication of merits; preaching the freedom from the three vices and eight adversities; observing precepts without slandering others; and the Ten Venerable Deeds(十善) - these disciplines are the paths to purify Buddha Land and the actions to allow all sentient beings to be born in the Pure Land.” Thirdly, the Pure Land perspective on Bodhisattava mind considers that Pure Land is gained in behalf of all sentient beings.“ It is because Bodhisattva gains the Pure Land so as to benefit all sentient beings. If someone tries to build a house in a vacant lot, it can be built as desired. However, if someone tries to build a house in the air, it cannot be built after all. Like this, Bodhisattva intends to gain the Pure land to bring all sentient beings to perfection, which is not achieved in the air.”It indicates that Mahayana means to unwaveringly complete the practice in any situations or conditions based on the deeds intended for the salvation of sentient beings is just how to establish the Pure Land. Finally, according to the Pure Land perspective on otherworlds, the Pure Land where Buddha resides is believed to exist somewhere far from this world, and it is revealed that the Pure Land is located in a specific direction such as west or east, or in the Ten Directions. “Upon showing Akshobhya Tathagata and a pure Buddha Land, Abhirata to the people in the mundane world, they resolved upon Supreme Perfect Enlightenment and desired to be born in Abhirata Buddha Land. Then Buddha foretold that they would be born in the Buddha Land in the future.”This perspective considers that if one’s mind is changed, the ideal world can be changed into the real world. In view of the foregoing, the Pure Land discussed in Vimalakirti Sutra implies that Buddha Land is accomplished if we observe disciplines and practice with pure mind in the land we are living in today, pledge the salvation of sentient beings, and have faith that the ideal world will be changed into the real world.
