초록

본고는 노사학파가 19세기 후반 영남 서부지역에서 형성될 수 있었던 배경과 성장과정, 그리고 문인 정재규의 역할을 분석한 것이다. 노사 기정진은 1840년 대부터 서학을 배척하고 의리와 도덕의 확산을 꾀하였던 산림학자로서 중앙정 계의 주목을 받았으며, 1850년대에는 영남의 노론학자들로부터 동방 도학의 정통을 계승한 인물로 받들어질 정도로 명성이 높았다. 뿐만 아니라 기정진의 일족이나 문인들도 세도정치기와 대원군 집권기에 점차 중앙정계와 향촌사회 에 두각을 나타내게 되었으며 19세기 이래 영남 서부지역에서 당색의 대립이 약화되고 다른 당파나 지역 간의 교류가 활발하게 진행되었기 때문에 주리론과 위정척사사상에 바탕을 둔 노사학파가 형성될 수 있었다. 당시 영남 서부의 노사학파는 남인 출신도 있었었지만 대체로 노론 위주의 인 물들이었으며, 새롭게 성장한 경제력을 바탕으로 학문을 통해 가문을 일으키려 는 인물이 많았다. 이들은 향촌질서를 바로잡기 위하여 지방관과 협조하여 향 약 실시나

영어초록

This paper attempts to trace the circumstances to which Nohsa scholars' faction was able to form and develop in the western part of Youngnam province in the late 19th century while conducting close analysis of the pivotal role Jeong Jae Gyu(鄭載圭) played within the larger picture. Since the 1840s rustic literati Gi Jeong Jin(奇正鎭) began to catch the attention of the political circles of the time with his rejection of Western learning while insisting on spreading righteousness and moral principles. By the 1850s he was widely heralded as the legitimate heir to the orthodox Confucianism in Chosun Dynasty by the Youngnam Nohron scholars. Furthermore, Gi's kinsmen and disciples began to distinguish themselves among political circles of the central and the provincial governments during the reign of Taewongun and the "In-law government" period. From the 19th century on, disputes between political parties started to die down considerably making exchange between rival factions and regions possible. These conditions provided a fertile ground for Nohsa scholars' faction based on Ju-Ri philosopy and "Wi-Jeong-Cheok-Sa (衛正斥邪)“, defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy) doctrine to take shape. At that time, although there were some from the Namin camp, those who had Nohron influences formed the majority of the Nohsa scholars' faction. Particularly, those who had aspirations to restore honor to their family name by way of academic legacy fueled by the newly acquired economic wealth were on the rise. To establish order in the provincial districts Nohsa adherents would implement "Hyang-Yak(鄕約)" by working closely with local officials. Highly regarded were the learnings of "Sohak" that these scholars tirelessly devoted themselves to spreading the word bringing up many disciples in the western Youngnam area. Taking into account that Youngnam has traditionally been a regional stronghold of Jeong Yeo Chang and Jo Sik devotees, Nohsas would regularly hold lectures and participate in memorial services in shrines and seowons(private academies) dedicated to these idolized scholars of the past. Consequently, these efforts helped to widen Nohsa faction's influences over Jinju, Hadong, Sanchung, Hapcheon and Euiryeong area. Jeong Jae Gyu's role in the rise of Nohsa faction in Youngnam region is undenialble. After Gi Jeong Jin's death, Jeong's aggressive propagation won him the largest number of disciples in all of Youngnam. By holding regular lectures with his colleagues and disciples stressing Neo-Confucianism and the "Yehak"(study of rituals) he would make sure that Gi Jeong Jin's Ju-Ri philosophy and "Wi-Jung-Cheok-Sa" doctrine passed on untarnished. Jeong Jae Gyu would later publish "Dap-Mun-Ryu_Pyeon(答問類編)“ in order to teach Gi Jeong Jin's theory in a more systematized way. In 1901, when Gi Jeong Jin's collection of works were being reprinted in a woodcut edition, he would personally supervise the entire process. Later when Gi Jeong Jin's rhetorical writings such as ｢Oe-Pil(猥筆)｣ and ｢Nap-Ryang-Sa-Eui(納凉私議)｣ were being denounced as heresy, by the likes of Song Byung Seon, Song Byung Sun, Jeon Woo and the Nohron faction of Youngnam region, it was Jeong Jae Gyu who would rally his colleagues and disciples to defend Gi's theories. And Jeong himself would, through his own writings, stress that Gi Jeong Jin's Ju-Ri philosophy was not in any way a contradiction to Ju Hui or Lee Yi's theories. Jeong Jae Gyu would further advance Gi Jeong Jin's "Wi-Jung- Cheok-Sa" doctrine by organizing volunteer's army movement in the Yeongnam region. In 1881 he took part in the "Shin-Sa-Cheok-Sa" movement. And in 1895, together with Confucian scholars in western Youngnam, he would launch the volunteers' army movement against the Japanese invasion and the Western influences. In 1905, when the very existence of his nation was in great peril, due to Japanese attempt at violating the national sovereignty, he contended that public sentiment should be unified. With his disciples in tow he called upon Choi Ik Hyeon of in Chungcheong province and Gi Woo Man of in Jeolla province during the month of December through January in 1905. By combining forces, they would lay the groundwork for the volunteer's army movement. A declaration was sent to all parts of the country and disciples were dispatched to gather more volunteer fighters. Although, ultimately, volunteer army movement turned out to be a total failure, owing to lack of enlistees and military support, it was not without merit. The campaign had contributed in raising the reputation of the Youngnam Nohsa faction which valued unswerving loyalty above all else.
