초록

이글은 한말에서 일제강점기에 걸쳐 활동했던 곽종석의 성리학적 세계관에 입각한 國權恢復의 방안과 성격을 검토한 것이다. 곽종석의 국권회복 방향은 조선이 당면한 국내·외의 시대적 과제를 감안한 토 대 위에서 전개되고 있었다. 그는 서구 제국주의 열강의 진출이 본격화한 국제 정세에서 말기적 증상을 보이고 있는 조선의 내부적 모순을 극복하지 않고는 국권이 보장될 수 없다는 점을 전제로, 內修를 통한 自强의 방안을 모색함과 동 시에 열강들의 역학관계를 활용할 수 있는 외교력의 발휘를 주문했다. 이에 따 라 그는 서구사조의 적극적인 수용을 지향하는 開化의 입장에 동조하기를 거부 했을 뿐만 아니라, 배타적인 자세로 물리력을 동원해 外勢의 배척을 요구하는 衛正斥邪의 논리에 대해서도 부정적인 입장을 분명히 했다. 그는 제국주의 국 가들의 침탈에 따른 사상적 혼돈과 국가적 위기를 東道西器論의 입장에서 대응 하되 유학의 현실적 변화를 통해 부국강병을 실현하는 방향을 모색했다. 결국 곽종석의 국권회복 방향은 국내·외의 시대적 상황에 탄력적으로 적응할 수 있는 유학의 변화를 통한 內修를 토대로 열강들의 역학관계를 활용한 외교 력을 발휘해 민족의 생존을 보장받는 기조에서 전개되고 있었던 셈이다. 이를 위해 그는 열강의 공관에 布告文을 보내 일본을 견제할 것을 촉구했을 뿐만 아 니라 乙巳勒約의 부당성을 제기함과 동시에 五賊의 처단을 주장했고, 파리강화 회의에 일제의 만행을 폭로하며 조선의 독립의 당위를 알리기 위해 長書를 기 초했으며, 상해 임시정부 등 해외 독립운동을 지원하기 위해 儒林團 대표로서 大同團을 적극 지원하고 나서기도 했던 것이다. 이러한 그의 역할은 寒洲學派 의 ‘心卽理’說을 이념적 근간으로 정립한 分合論的 세계관에 바탕을 둔 것으로, 이는 동아시아 범주에서 벗어난 거시적 안목에서 다양한 사조를 포용적으로 수 용하는 그의 현실인식과 대응자세의 단면을 보여주는 것이라 하겠다.

영어초록

This thesis deals with the ways and characteristics of the restoration of national sovereignty based on Neo-Confucious perspective of Kwak Jong-suk who distinguished himself from the end of the Chosun Dynasty to the Period of the Japanese Occupation. His course of the restoration of national sovereignty was evolved on the foundation of historical tasks, domestic and foreign, facing Chosun. Under the premise that national sovereignty could not be guaranteed unless Chosun overcame the internal contradictions showing terminal symptoms amid the international situations where the Western imperial powers invaded Chosun in full scale, he emphasized the exertion of diplomacy utilizing the dynamics between the Western powers, at the same time he sought methods to strengthen his country by means of disciplining internal minds. In accordance with that, he not only clearly refused to accord with the stance of the Enlightenment Party which aimed the positive acceptance of Western trends of thoughts, but he also took a negative stance against the movement of guarding righteousness and excluding wickedness which insisted the exclusion of foreign powers using physical force with firmly closed attitude. He sought ways to realize national prosperity and military power through the realistic changes of Confucianism and at the same time he coped with the ideological chaos and the national crisis caused by the invasion of the imperial nations on the foundation of Eastern spirit and Western material. After all Kwak Jong-suk's aims of the restoration of the national sovereignty was unfolded on the basis of the guarantee of national survival by exertion of diplomacy by utilizing the dynamics between the Western powers on the foundation of internal defense through the transformation of Confucianism which could adapt to the domestic situations elastically. To carry out this purpose, he not only sent proclamations to the embassies of the Western powers and urged them to curb Japan but he also insisted the execution of the five betrayers of Chosun disclosed the unjustice of the Ul-sa Treaty, exposed the Japanese brutalities at the Paris Peace Conference, drafted a lengthy document to notify the appropriateness of the independence of Chosun, and he ardently supported Dae-dong Dan as the representative of the Confucian school in order to support overseas independence movement of the Shanghai Temporary Government. His roles were rooted on the boon-hap-ron's(分合論) perspective established on the ideological stem of the theory of sim-juk-ri(心卽理 說)of the Han-ju School and they showed an aspect of perception of the reality and posture to cope with it which accepted generously various trends of thoughts escaping from the East Asian category.
