This study aims to develop a couple sandplay program using the imago method for the individual and relationship growth of
premarital couples, and verify the effects amongst participating groups. To fulfill these objectives, the program selected eight
premarital couples residing in the metropolitan area, and used the “imago couple therapy” method as a therapeutic tool for
addressing childhood wounds after understanding their emotional experiences and the psychological dynamics of their
childhoods, and applied “sandplay therapy” for imaging and materializing imagery. The program is composed of a total of
six sessions with contents of the past, present and future. The subjects of the study include eight couples, who were divided
into experimental and control groups, respectively, for verifying the effects of the program. The program was conducted by
targeting four participating groups for two hours each session for six weeks. As for the analysis, this study carried out a
statistical comparison between the experimental and control groups through ex ante-ex post analysis, and applied the details
of the analysis comprehensively through counseling. The results of the analysis on the effects show that the premarital
couples belonging to the experimental groups experienced individual growth by improving their self-identity and ego resiliency
as compared to those who had not participated in the couple sandplay therapy program using the imago method. Such
results indicate that the couple sandplay therapy program using the imago method is effective for relationship growth by
improving intimacy between couples, strengthening marital relations, improving communication and teaching methods for
coping with conflict.
