This review study was attempted to summarize the major results of the research on the standing height of adolescents and to suggest research problems recommended to be studied in Korea.
For this purpose, about forty reseach papers published in Korea and the U. S. A. roughly in the last ten years were selected and analyzed. These researches were summarized in terms of 1) research method, 2) general growth tendency, 3) relation of height growth of adolescents and psychological impacts on them, and 4) major factors influencing the physical development. The results of this study were presented in the main text, but omitted in this summary.
The review revealed that many psychologists and medical scientists are interested in the physical development of adolescents and have conducted a large number of researches in this field. However, in Korea, only a few researches were reported. And, most of these were conducted by medical scientists and physical education specialists. with a varying ex-tent of shortcomings in the research method.
Currently, two studies are being carried out in Korea. The one being conducted by the Korean Institute for Research in the Behavioral Sciences is a longitudinal study measuring infants’ height every half year, and the other by Korean Educational Develoment Institute is a semi-longitudinal study collecting and analyzing students’ height records in the primary and secondary schools.
The present review suggests the following line of research as worthwhile:
1) Longitudinal studies are recommended thereby to examine the general tendency of physical growth of adolescents. The physical growth of adolescents should be measured at least every half year for ten or more years. Semi-longitudinal studies could also be used for depicting the general tendency with in a shorter period of time.
2) Comparative studies based on bone age are recommended in estimating the exact onset of puberty and in predicting the maximum height atone’s adulthood.
3) The studies on the secular trend of height growth are recommended to identify the factors influencing physical development.
4) The studies on the sitting height and the height of the lower leg of adolescents would provide valuable information, for example, designing the students' desks and chairs.
