Ⅰ. 서 론
1. 연구의 필요성
인간은 가족을 통하여 사회적 구성원으로서의 역할을 향상시킬 수 있는 기회를 부여받게 되며, 또한 가족원끼리의 상호 작용을 통하여 정서적 및 경제적으로 성장하고 발달하게 된다. 따라서, 가족은 상호 관련된 부분들에 의하여 전체를 형성하는 구조적, 기능적 복합성을 지닌 혈연관계로 결합된 사회적 체계라 할 수 있다(Wilson & Kneisl, 1988).
이러한 가족 체계의 한 부분인 가족 구성원의 장애는 가족 전체까지 영향을 미치게 된다(박석돈 외, 2001).
특히 정신지체인의 경우에는 연령이 높아질수록 중증 정신지체인의 비율이 높아지는 현상을 보이기 때문에 가족에 대한 의존도가 다른 장애 유형보다 높게 나타나며 직업재활을 포함한 재활서비스에서의 수혜자적 경향 역시 높게 나타난다. 이는 비장애인에 비하여 지능이나 사회적응능력이 열등한 정신지체인이 연령이 증가할수록 비장애인과 비교하여 더욱 큰 격차를 나타낸다는 것을 지적하는 것이다(한국사회보건연구원, 1995).
정신지체인 자녀를 둔 부모는 자녀의 출산 직후나 양육 과정에서 나타나는 문제들보다는 성인으로 성장하였을 경우 발생하는 심리적, 사회적, 교육적, 경제적 측면의 문제들에 더욱 심각하게 직면하는 경우가 많다.
성인이 된 후에도 사회적, 직업적 특성으로 인하여 지속적으로 발생하는 문제들은 장애인의 고용에도 영향을 미치게 되어 전체 가족의 경제적인 문제를 야기 시키게 되기 때문에, 이들의 직업획득 기회를 원조하는 직업재활의 의미는 비장애인의 직업에 대한 개념보다 중요하며 또한 가족들이 가지고 있는 재활에 대한 요구나 인식은 매우 중요하다고 할 수 있겠다.
한국보건사회연구원(2000)의 「2000년도 장애인 실태조사」에 따르면 우리나라의 장애인 출현율은 전체 인구의 약 2.35%로 대략 1,44만 명에 이르며, 이 중 정신지체인은 약 5만 명 정도로 추정된다고 보고하였다. 이는 1995년과 비교하였을 때 2만 여명 정도가 증가한 것으로, 정신지체인의 수적 증가에 적합한 직업재활서비스의 증가 또한 이뤄져야 할 것이며 이 과정에서 가족이 가지고 있는 욕구와 인식이 배제되어서는 안 된다.
