이 기사는 2021년에 작성된 기사로서 당시 미국에서 케이블 TV의 구독자들이 이전보다 더욱 빠른 속도로 감소세를 보이고 있다는 내용으로 시작을 한다. 이러한 세 가지 변화가 일어나게 된 배경에는 근본적으로 코로나19 팬데믹으로 인해서 사람들이 이전보다 집에서 훨씬 더 오랜 시간을 머무르게 되고, 그에 따라서 자연스럽게 미디어를 훨씬 더 많이 이용하게 되면서 미디어를 이용하는 환경이 크게 변화했기 때문이다. 소비자들은 과거 전통적인 방식에 비교했을 때 보다 더 편리한 방식으로 미디어를 소비하고자 하는 방향으로 변화를 보이고 있다.
소비자들은 과거 케이블 TV를 시청하기 위해서 돈을 지불했던 것에서 오늘날에는 넷플릭스와 같은 스트리밍 플랫폼으로 옮겨 가고 있다. 그렇다고 해서 시청자들이 기꺼이 더 많은 돈을 지불하고자 하는 것은 아니다. 소비자들은 대개 넷플릭스를 포함하여 여러 개의 플랫폼을 이용하며, 여러 플랫폼을 합쳐서 예전 케이블 티비 구독료를 내는 등 일종의 심리적인 가격 상한선을 가지고 있다. 이에 마케터들 역시 소비자들이 더 많이 이용하는 커넥티드 TV를 겨냥한 광고를 송출하는 등의 방식으로 대응을 하고 있다.
