On the Ancient Western ArchitecturesThe origin of architecture goes back to pre-historic era. Through hundreds and thousands of years, architecture continued to change and develop still in today. Different forms and paradigms affected each other through ages, which is a valuable fact for nowadays’ students to keep in mind. The purpose of this essay is to review and interpret architectures from pre-historic era to Roman period in chronological order. As mentioned above, architecture started from pre-historic era. The earliest known settlement ever excavated is called the Settlement of Jericho, around 8000 to 7000 B.C. It was a natural phenomenon that developed according to domesticate grain and animals. Houses were built with mud and brick on stone foundation. As the town got richer and powerful neighbors settle near Jericho, fences and towers were built to fortify the town. Another known ancient settlement is the settlement at Catal Huyuk in today’s turkey. Located near the source of obe built around 3000 B.C. Most of all, megalith at Stonehenge is probably the most notable structure. The actual purpose of the structure is still under debate, but the most convincing hypotheses are that it was used as an observatory or a religious spot. Stonehenge and other discovered pre-historic settlements are astonishing considering the primitiveness of the tools and ideas of spacing. Yet, their religious ideas and philosophy could be found from the buildings. This so called the Neolithic revolution enabled men to build such settlements and structures, however, more marvelous develop in architecture took place after the invention of writing which happened in Mesopotamia and Egypt around 4000 to 3000 B.C. In these civilizations, more sophisticated forms of governmental system and religion evolved which eventually affected their architecture. Ziggurat was a typical form of architecture that dominated Sumer with strong religious context. The axis of the structures is strongly emphasiz. The entire structures were constructed higher than the ground level and the composition of courtyards, king’s residence and the throne room, and Ishtar gate successfully shows the political and religious power of Sargon. The royal palace at Persepolis, around 520-460 B.C is another notable structure in Persia. The pillars in “Apadana” give strong impression and rhythm to the space. At the same time, Egyptian civilization arose around the Nile River. Egyptians’ emphasis on the tombs and afterlife was stronger than that of Mesopotamians. Architectures in forms of tombs developed. Mastaba, a bunker-shaped monumental tomb played an important role. Moreover, pyramids, from the stepped pyramid of Zoser to the pyramids at Gizeh, show the kings’ desire to show their power even after their death. In these tombs and other monuments such as the mortuary temple of Queen Hashepsut and of Ramses II also show the emphasis on symmetry, ratio and axis. As the agricultural system and hierarchy developrom the forms of architectures mentioned above. “Stepped Portico” and cyclopean walls are direct symbol of Aegean people’s adapting to the nature harmoniously. Moreover, it was quite hard to discover the emphasis on authority or religious supremacy that has been strengthened previously. The form of buildings in the palace of Knossos and the citadel of Tiryns is rather humble than extravagant. The use of stone and carved lion sculptures in Mycenae’s Lion Gate delivers spiritual solidness. The honesty of lines and forms of their architectures deliver the image of philosophical ideal and foretell the idea of democracy. One the other hand, Greek architectures that developed on the mainland of Greece is centered on temples and religious architectures. The most notable architecture of Greece is Parthenon, of Acropolis. Located at the top of a rock basin, much higher than the ground level, Acropolis is indeed a complex of worship and religious activities. The idea of space was made harmoniousll affected each other greatly. This is also same with the Etruscan and ancient Roman architecture. As all the other contemporaneous cultures did, Roman people also put high values on rituals and religious activities. In addition, during the age of so called “Pax Romana,” the Roman Empire was able to control almost all the Europe and part of Northern Africa. Obviously, it is easy to imagine the prosperity of Ancient Rome even through the remnants of their architecture. In addition to the emphasis on religion, there are many structures that also emphasized the idea of practicality and leisure. Pont Du Gard, a bridge-canal consisted of series of arches, culminated the idea of practicality, built for all. This aqueduct is not only practical but also authoritarian to others, overwhelming spectators with its enormous scale. The Colosseum, as well, is an oval shaped structure, consisted of arches, vaults and cross-vaults. We can see the orders used for the columns of the Colosseum, seems lik

  • SPA Brands Zara & Uniqlo (영문)
SPA BRANDS&In 21C, the topic of fashion market is definitely about speed. Each enterprises of fashion industry are shouting ‘earlier and faster’. In the past, companies of fashion industry predicted coming trend very carefully for next season, putting all the best efforts into design and produced the goods to market. And they waited for the judges of consumers. They often wondered about predicting new trends and even if they succeed in catching the consumer’s taste of the season, it was impossible to produce new products in reflection from first step to shipment in the middle of the season. However, enterprises are not waiting anymore. They no more accept consumers’ judges passively. The changed environment made enterprises take ‘immediate reflection’ on even on delicate change in fashion trend. In fact, enterprises are now changing to ‘Real Time Enterprise’.Former companies understood the importance of interaction with environment but there was gap between them and it took quite a long management acts very important. It helps the products to be delivered to right place on right time. For this reason, investment on supply chain is increasing in fashion industry.ZARA and UNIQLO in this report are told as the most succeeded companies on environmental change and innovation of enterprise management system.ZARA and UNIQLO are SPA (Specialty Store Retailer of Private Label Apparel), meaning its activities are fully integrated from design through production and retailing. To offer high-quality products at low prices, both brands backed by sales network of worldwide stores, control all stages of the supply process, from product design to the procurement of materials, quality control, inventory adjustments and other aspects and insist on low- cost management. Thus, they rank in top 5 brands among worldwide apparel specialty stores.ZARA is a brand in Inditex Group owned by Spanish Tycoom Amacio Ortega. The head office is in Garacia and the first ZARA retail shop opened in 1975 shorten the process period, from new product development to shop display, from months to weeks so the whole process of ‘production’, ‘distribution’ and ‘retailing’ could be unified. Zara’s business structure could be divided into 4 large sections which are ‘Design’, ‘Manufacturing & Sourcing’, ‘Distribution & Logistics’, and ‘Store’.The most impressive point of ZARA design team is that they reflect on trend changes immediately during sales season. Hence, they can figure concrete design of fashion trend which can be produced into products right away without delay based on market information system. For this, number of designers analyze sales data closely and read the atmosphere of shop to complete ‘new design of the day’. The role of design team not only stops there, but also produces sample of new completed design and display a few to see the marketability for analysis. Then, designs are made into real product under SCM (supply chain management) system. It utilizes information technoloto ZARA, UNIQLO business model contains ‘R&D’, ‘Production & Procurement’ and ‘Sales’ department with ‘Head Office’ in the center to manage and unify them.UNIQLO has ‘R&D’ (Research & Development) center where the latest information on different trends around the world, local news, lifestyles and materials. The center is in Tokyo, New York, Paris and Milan where the information from the city streets, from group subsidiary stores and business clients are collected. A concept for each season is determined based upon the information gathered. Then designs are created simultaneously in each center and garment ranges compiled to suit each individual market. Where design team determines the concept of the season in ZARA, the concept is determined at R&D center in UNIQLO.UNIQLO has contracts with over 70 partner factories with proactive technological support located in China and the rest of Asia for production. UNIQLO has dispatched a team of specialists called takumi (artisans with extensivei system. However, both run their business under fast retailing system that they could keep their inventory level low.Fashion industries do not release their products with precaution in the market and wait for the customer’s judge. They analyze the demand of consumers during the season and commercialize the demand quickly. In this kind of circumstance, QR (Quick Response) system plays very important role to enterprises. ZARA and UNIQLO are known as examples of successive case of introduction of QR. QR was definitely developed by the developed information technology but whether it can be fully utilized depends on the organizational environment of enterprise. Therefore, introduction of technology without innovation of organization does not mean a real innovation and it cannot fully carry out the function to extend an adaptability of a company regarding fast changing environment. For QR system to be settled successively, the enterprise needs to reorganize organization structure rationally
