“The Competitive Advantage of China”Options of whether to enter the market in ChinaI. IntroductionI have been asked by my CEO to decide how to expand into the Chinese market; and before I make my decision between following three options, I would like to examine pros and cons of each option while considering now a consistently developing and growing market of China in mind.II. Option 1: Export from KoreaOur company may export from Korea to China directly from our factories and company offices from here. There are three main possible advantages and disadvantages of this option.1. ProsFor pros, first, by exporting directly from Korea, we can avoid hassle stemming from Chinese yet to be settled system of commerce. Even though China has developed and updated many of its prior system, still there is risk that Korean system does not have. For instance, the legal system of China lacks transparency and is inconsistent in protecting private businesses.By exporting straight from Korea, furthermore, we may able to save insurance premiums that would occur because of the unstable and less business friendly system of China.2. ConsBut there is a big problem of “taxation” against foreign products which we will be subjected to. Since we want to expand our personal computers’ market in China, we might lose the price competitiveness with higher tax, especially against Haier or Lenovo which are world renowned computer makers.III. Option 2: License a Chinese firm to manufacture and market the computer in China1. ProsThis can be safer in terms of taxation or regulatory jargon we might end up by directly exporting from Korea. If we license a Chinese firm to manufacture and market the computer in China, we may obtain only pros of both worlds – while we will be able to enjoy Chinese governmental support by licensing a Chinese firm, we still can overlook the whole production and marketing process to maintain our service level and the quality of our product.2. ConsHowever, Chinese government will still think us as a foreign company, hence, cons from above mentioned option may affect our decision here as well. In addition, market access is still somewhat restricted with foreign companies. I assume that since Chinese government thinks very importantly about their competitiveness in IT business including computer related industry, our possibility to break into the market might be slim. Based on the fact that foreign companies were able to compete in only 75 percent of China’s 80 business sectors; domestic private companies, on the other hand, had access to less than 50 percent of these markets, our chances might look even slimmer.III. Option 3: Setup a wholly owned subsidiary in China1. ProsHaving a wholly owned subsidiary means that we will be able to utilize fully the help of Chinese government more than any other options. We will be able to avoid higher taxation due to being a foreign company; after the initial set-up process, further legal problems or administrative jargon can be minimized. This is good for our business.2. ConsBut a wholly owned subsidiary might be a bad idea in a long run. We will not be able to supervise and have a hands-on approach to the marketing and production process. This can be detrimental to overall quality control of our personal computers which means that we might limit ourselves to the Chinese market just in front of us right now. Also, protection of intellectual protection of property rights is still inadequate compare to Korea. By giving many parts of production and marketing controls to a wholly owned subsidiary in China, we might not be able to prevent potential intellectual property theft. A wholly owned subsidiary will make it harder to bring a suit in Korea which means that we might pay even more for potential legal actions in case of such a theft.IV. Conclusion – So what should we do?I must say that for now we should export directly from Korea for following reasons. First, we have just invented a revolutionary new personal computer that can perform the same functions as PCs, but costs only half as much to manufacture. This means that we are at the beginning of expanding our market in personal computer, hence, we cannot risk intellectual property protections we can enjoy from Korea and subsequent legal remedies available from here.Secondly, since it costs only half as much to manufacture, we can compensate cons of exporting directly from Korea to China – higher tax. Because we will be still price competitive even with higher taxation. Moreover, because China is now growing fast with exceptionally large potential buyers, and many of them are with buying power far beyond what they used have before. Therefore, if we market our product by concentrating on our higher product quality while having a similar price level, we will expand our market in China successfully.Therefore, I hope I have expressed my opinion on this matter clearly to you. This space creates a link between the University and the city. This permanently animated space is like a screen which shows the activity of the University. This empty space creates also a view where the several buildings are displayed and where the Campus Valley takes place. A landscape then, more than an architectural work, ‘The Campus Valley’ is engraved into the ground and marks the entrance of University site like a furrow. Starting by a long slopping down esplanade, it rise up at his edge with benches and steps which can be used as an outdoor amphitheatre. The so profiled valley marks the axis of the campus, organises the collective functions and distributes the old buildings as an Anglo-Saxon compus . The two mirror facades erected face to face design two high glass cliffs who bring natural light to the buried spaces mixing opportunely the study places, administration with cultural and commercial spaces like movies, theatre, restaurants and shops. Than the urban dimension and the territory become more important than the object. This building without emergence transforms the topography of the place and completely modifies the urban geography by linking physically the building and visually the elements of the site into a new global landscape. By burying the complex, as in French National Library in Paris with its sunken garden in the middle of a wood deck framing, or in the Velodrome and Olympic swimming pool in Berlin engraved in an apple tree orchard, I have the desire, physically speaking, to appropriate the territory, to mingle the contructed material with the ground, the desire to exploit to its paroxysm the idea that “concept and matter have to grapple one with another”. The genealogy with the previous projects is evident when we consider the fantastic excavation required by this construction. After three years of work with Ehwa , Baum architects, the local consultant and Samsung construction the valley are the only remaining part of that void. The three sunken architectures buildings are buried to liberate the territory above. A contemporary metropolis as Seoul seems to have a dramatic need of building who creates a breath in the city to balance the fast densification of real estate developers. With a pure and simple geometry of the building outline and interior we can reach a very abstract effect. The curtain wall of the valley, especially the exterior mirror steel fin is a new technological element which required in experimental development made in collaboration with Samsung engineers. Designed and rigorously built to resist to high wind stress, with its very material, strong and heavy the full stainless steel blades, bolts, brackets and canopies are disappearing due to the huge scale.
