6. What was the influence of the Scandinavian settlement on the English language?
영국으로 이주한 북유럽인들의 언어와 고대영어를 사용하던 영국의 사람들의 언어는 비슷한 점이 많았다. 고대영어와 고대 노르웨이어는 자주 사용하던 수많은 단어들을 공통적으로 가지고 있었고, 스칸디나비아의 언어가 차용되고 지금까지 남아있는 것들이 많이 있다. 11세기 후반에, 북유럽인들은 점차적으로 영국식으로 동화되는 중이었지만, 그러는 동안 스칸디아비아 단어들이 영어에 도입되었다.
대체로 스칸디나비아어의 차용은 기존 고대영어에 있던 한 단어를 다른 단어로 대체하는것에 불과했고, 일부 새로운 단어들은 영국엔 없고 스칸디나비아에만 존재하던 새로운 개념이나 새로운 사물들을 나타내고 있다. 그 외 다른 것들은 한 예로 `sister`를 들 수 있다. 고대 노르웨이어 `systir`와 고대영어 `sweostor`처럼 서로 관련있는 단어들이 형태상으로 눈에 띄게 다른 일부의 경우, 현대 영어의 ‘sister’로 변한 것처럼 스칸디나비아어의 형태가 살아남아 기존의 영어 형태를 약간만 수정한 것이었다. 그리고 `th-` 형태의 단어들도 모두 스칸디나비아에서 기원한 것이다.

노르만 정복은 고대영어가 끝날 무렵 1066년 노르만인들이 영국을 정복한 이후, 통치계급을 앵글로-노르만으로 대체해 영국의 통치언어로 Norman French(노르만 프랑스어)를 도입을 초래한 사건이다.

앵글로색슨왕국의 알프래드 대왕 이후 마지막 남성 직계 후계자였던 고백왕 에드워드가 후계자를 남기지 못하고 죽자, 귀족 중에 막강한 힘을 가졌던 Godwin(갓윈) 백작의 아들 Harold(해럴드)가 왕위에 오르고, 그 시기에 프랑스 북부의 노르망디 지방의 공작인 윌리엄이 무장한 기마병들을 이끌고 영국으로 쳐들어오게 되었다.
