In the article, “The Case For Democracy,” by Natan Sharansky(2004), the author said, “The drug of freedom is universally potent. Once the life of doublethink and self-censorship is shed, once the brainwashing stops, once freedom is tasted, no people will ever choose to live in fear again.” In the world, there are still many people who desire to get their own freedom. Once these people who are prosecuted by certain social classes or dictatorial power have experienced freedom, they should be willing to struggle to obtain that again. As freedom has powerful toxicity, none of the people who tasted that will want to put themselves in such a circumstance even if some people have been in suppression for a long time. By the way, in this point the writer indicates that the freedom people desire eventually comes from a democracy. This political system has changed the meaning of human kind and how it works.
The democracy first took place in ancient Greece as the political system. Also, during the Rome period, this system existed. However, there was limitation of participation which means that only a few people could attend one or more meetings of the popular assembly. Over time, the meaning of “Democracy” has not been the same as a modern definition is. In the 18th and 19th centuries, United States was the first country that adopted the democracy to protect civil rights and liberties. Eventually, in the late 19th century, suffrage for all American citizens was expanded.
