The history of American novels is short and lacking in quantity compared with other countries. It was surprising to find, on the internet, the number of Nobel prizes in literature awarded to authors of the United States. How can American literature, which has a really short history, receive numerous Noble prizes? Do you think it is very strange? Recently I have read “The Lottery” and thought this novel was hard to understand. I realized that these kinds of novels are based on American literature. Actually I was very shocked, after I read the story because I imagined this story was about the lottery ticket or prize and the story might be very upbeat and cheerful, but it was very sad and gloomy. The story starts like this “The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green.” Therefore nobody could foreshadow the sad, gloomy, and scary story in this sentence, and I was also one of them.
The author, Shirley Jackson, may have wanted to depict the story’s morose and gloominess in reverse. The novel, published in 1949, is one of her most famous works along with “The Haunting of Hill House.”
