Ⅰ.서론
William Wordsworth(1770~1850)는 영국 낭만주의 시인들 가운데 중심적인 인물로 낭만주의의 특성을 그의 시속에 형상화한 위대한 시인이다. 영국문학사에서도 그를 당대의 가장 위대한 시인으로 밝히고 있다.
“A reflection of this enthusiasm is to be found in the early life of William Wordsworth, the greatest English poet of the era."

Wordsworth는 신교전주의의 규범과 전통에서 벗어나 자연과 일상적인 삶의 문제를 통하여 인간존재의 참다운 의미를 추구 하고자 했다. 그는 시골 사람들이 자연의 아름다운 영원한 형상들과 일체가 되기 때문에 자연과 그속에서 투영된 인간의 모습에서 시혼을 살려나갔다.
1843년 Robert Southey의 뒤를 이어 계관시인이 된 그는 Europe 문화와 연결되어 있으며 영국문화는 유럽문화의 맥락을 제외하고는 이해할수 없다.
당시 유럽문화의 큰 변혁은 동속적 노예의 사라짐과 인간의 개인화, 그리고 이러한 문화의 흐름에 상응하는 진실한 인간미의 추구였다. Wordsworth의 인간미는 여덟살 때 어머니의 죽음, 열세살 때 아버지의 죽음으로 인한 정신적 방황을 호반에 의한 기쁨으로 전환 시킬수 있었다는 것에서 그의 인간미를 이해할수 있다. 프랑스에 건너가 프랑스 혁명에 동조할 만큼 그의 인생관에 확고한 정신적인 정립을 가졌다. 그는 일반 시민들처럼 경제적 어려움에서 생활하였으며 1827년 The Excursion을 출판하기 전 W. Scott와 Byron에 비교할만한 시집을 판매하지 못했으며, 그의 시집 판매에 대해서 M.Arnold는 이렇게 진술하였다.
...that, for he knew not how many year, his poetry had never brought him in enough to buy his shoestring.
그러나 경제적 곤란과 외과의사의 딸 Annette Vallon 사이에 태어난 Caroline에 대한 번민, 삼촌과의 생활에서 야기되는 정신적 좌절이 삶과 예술에 상관을 더욱 깊게 생각하게 했다. 자연을 통하여 고통이 치유됨을 깨닫고 계속하여 시작에 몰두하였다. 기쁨을 표현하는 시어는 감정의 흐름을 균형있게 조절하는 것으로 상용되었고, 서민계급의 더럽혀지지 않은 원시적인 감정의 시어와 내적인 각성을 요구하는 언어를 구사하였다.
