소개글
영문과 전공수업 중 음운론 시간에 했던 과제입니다. 음운론이란 말 그대로 영어의 소리에 관한 것인데, 눈에 보이는 철자와 소리와의 연관관계에 대해 썼던 자유 리포트입니다. 인터넷이나 책을 참고하지 않고 순수하게 제가 쓴 리포트입니다.

본문내용
Very often pronunciation teaching has focused on the important sound contrasts and has almost totally ignored the way these sounds are represented in writing and their role in the learners' pronunciation development. It has often claimed that English spelling is totally irregular. This is not the case.
There is not always strict one-to-one correspondence sound and letter. Some letters have only one value called 'single-valued' : some letters can have two or more values called "multi-valued"
In the English spelling system, a 'root' or 'base' is always spelled the same. This feature makes English spelling a highly 'visual' system in the sense that the reader can very easily recognize related words. This visual principle works in another interesting way. Two words which are unrelated and different in meaning tend to be separated visually for the reader by their spellings even though they may sound the same when said.
Some of the symbols used in the writing system are combinations of two or more letters from the alphabet. One could call them 'composite' symbols. Note that composite symbols can therefore be single-valued' or multi-valued too.
