칼 구스타브 융(Carl Gustav Jung [1875-1961])에 따르면 심리학은 문학 비평의 도구로 이용될 수 있다. 그는 저서에서 “인간의 마음이 모든 예술과 과학의 핵심이기 때문에 심리적 과정에 대한 연구인 심리학이 문학 연구를 위해 제공될 수 있음은 확실하다”(“It is obvious enough that psychology, being a study of psychic processes, can be brought to bear on the study of literature, for the human psyche is the womb of all the arts and sciences.”; Jung 86)고 언급했다. 그는 “심리적”(“psychological”; 89)인 문학이 인간의 “중요한 경험, 강력한 감정, 고통, 열정과 인간의 운명”(“crucial experiences, powerful emotions, suffering, passion, the stuff of human fate”; 89)을 소재로 삼아 “우리가 피하거나 간과하는 경향이 있는 일상의 사건”(“everyday happenings which we tend to evade or to overlook”; 89)을 깨닫게 한다고 말한다. 그는 요한 볼프강 폰 괴테(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe [1749-1832])의 『파우스트』(Faust)를 예로 들어 원형을 설명하였고, 제임스 조이스(James Joyce [1882-1941])의 『율리시즈』(Ulysses)를 의식의 해방과 정신분열증과 관련하여 비평하였다.

융은 자기실현을 의식과 무의식을 통합하여 사람 전체를 온전하게 실현하는 것으로 다음과 같이 정의 내렸다.
나는 ‘자기실현’이라는 용어를 가능한 한 단순하게 설명해보겠다. ‘자기실현’이란 인간을 독특한, 나눌 수 없는 한 사람 혹은 ‘온전한 인간’ 즉 ‘개인’으로서 만드는 정신의 과정 이다.
