Conclusion
From all the data that I collected and after closely studying the changes in the Korean economy during Park Chung Hee’s rule, I can conclude that Korea made great strides during Park’s rule. Park Chung Hee’s major transformational policies were the export led industrialization. He realized that the main reason why the country was poor was the lack of foreign reserve, which was crucial for developing industries. His main concern was to improve the lives of Koreans and the only way to do so was to increase the foreign reserves that could lead to industrialization of the country. Park brought about a number of changes that were required to boost export e.g. he improved the infrastructure, businesses and industries and finally realized his dream of increasing export and thereby improving the economy of the country.

Although he was an authoritarian leader, I feel that at that time, Korean economy was in a poor state and a strong leader was required to improve the situation. Park Chung Hee was able to bring about the change only by his high handed rule. Park Chung Hee’s authoritarian government was able to obtain high export led industrialization because the quality of governance was high.

Once the Korean economy had improved, it once again became a democratic country, but the authoritarian rule was important to bring about the major transformation, which would have taken much longer under a democratic government. Many of the policies that transformed the country from a poor nation to an economic power in Asia would not have been as effective under a democratic government.
