Prince Hal’s political theatrical
In Shakespeare’s Henry IV, part 1 and Henry V, Prince Hal follows Machiavellism in that he conceals his true self from the court until he receives the throne from Henry IV. Shakespeare depicts Prince Hal as an ideological hero as well as a true possessor of honour. Prince Hal is aware that his father, Henry IV has obtained the throne through an illegal act. Hal also acknowledges that the hollow pursuit of honour like Hotspur’s, or outlaw behaviours exhibited by Falstaff are not acceptable in politics. Because Hal does not want to be like the people around him, he tries to stay out of the Court and pretends he is not interested in the crown; he chooses not to involve himself in the Court and hides himself in a dissipated life, waiting for the right time to reveal his competence of being a Machiavellian ruler. To accomplish the goal, Hal uses Falstaff in order to reform political morality and later demonstrates his competence through the decisive act of refusing Falstaff in order to maintain his power.
