Currently in South Korea, Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs and Ministry of Environment focus on the four major rivers restoration project which is associated with aquatic environmental problem.
The total amount of water by the average annual precipitation is 126.7 billion of which approximately 45 percent is lost to evaporation and flooding. Rainfall per person is less than 10 percent of the world average. More than 60 percent of Korea’s annual precipitation is concentrated in summer is the most flood spill. Because 330-580 in coefficient of river regime are high, water management is disadvantage for the Korea water resources corporation. The annual water demand will increase by 2.1 percent due to improvement of living standard and industrial production increasing. In case of Korea, the slope of the river is more urgent compared to other countries. For this reason, after the rainy season until February next year, river purification capacity and dilution effects are reduced and river pollution is intensified.
Background of The four major rivers restoration project are as follows:
1) It requires a fundamental preparedness because of frequent drought and floods by climate change.
2) By pollutants entering watershed and water shortage in the dry season, water quality and ecosystem are necessary to prevent continuously.
3) Doing not take advantage of the waterfront is necessary to development and maintenance by systematically creating a pleasant and beautiful land space, and composition of high-need urban infrastructure.
