I. INTRODUCTION

Despite many decades have passed since the end of the Joseon era, the influence of the traditional values which derived from this era still significantly have impact on women’s position is society until today. It is unambiguous about the different position that women have in Korea—this is undoubtedly different to their counterparts in other Western countries, and this is related to the traditional and cultural pillars of the social norms of Korea that were built during the Joseon period .

Due to the flourishing of Neo-Confucianism during this era, women were naturally becoming subject to men, as docile and subjective beings only active within the family. Much limitation was imposed upon women due to the widely spreading Neo-Confucian values and thus changed the position of women to one which was considerably different from the previous dynasty .

However, despite these considerable limitations which were imposed against women during this time, there were specific groups of women who were exceptions to this widely appropriated Neo-Confucian values. Jumping over the boundaries that Neo-Confucianism drew to keep women inside the home, these women were participating in activities outside the home although varying in extent. There were women who were significantly influential during the Joseon era such as Hwang Jini a ginyeo who is still considered as one of the most influential women in Korean history and Seo Jang Geum an uinyeo who was highly credited for her medical skills, to those who were less influential but lived a life as opposed to the Neo-Confucian principles of subjective women such as the munyeo and haenyo.
