1. Definition and need for protocol
Protocol : 기계간 그리고 인간과 기계, 인간들간의 상호작용을 관리하는 가이드라인이나 규칙의 집합.
Protocol 은 data terminal equipment간에 그리고 computer 간 , terminal 간 의 의사소통을 위한 규칙들이다.
따라서 이들간의 통신을 위해서는 그때 그때에 맞는 각각의 protocol 이 필요하다.

2. Data link protocol function
Communications startup – 통신이 어떻게 시작되는지를 알려준다.
Character identification and framing – 문자로 전환, 제어문자들 간의 구분
Message identification – 메시지로의 전환기능
Line control – 송신 터미널과 수신 터미널간의 전송, 수신 확인.
Error control – 에러가 발견되었을 경우, 갑작스런 통신의 지연발생시 해결
Termination – 정상적이거나 비정상적인 상황하의 통신의 마침을 알려줌
