초등학생의 스마트폰 의존과 그릿의 종단적 관계: 다변량 잠재성장모형 분석을 중심으로 (The Longitudinal Relationship Between Smartphone Dependence and Grit in Elementary School Student: A Multivariate Latent Growth Model Analysis)

초록

본 연구는 초등학교 4~6학년을 대상으로 스마트폰 의존과 그릿의 종단적 변화 양상및 종단적 관계를 살펴보고자 하였다. COVID-19 이후 초등학생의 미디어 이용시간이 크게 증가하였고 최근에는 스마트폰 과의존에 대한 초등학생 증가세가 뚜렷한 것으로 나타났다. 무엇보다 아동기 스마트폰 의존은 그릿의 발달 저하와 관련되고 이는 장기적인 목표 설정 및 성취의 어려움을 심화시킬 수 있으므로 스마트폰의존과 그릿의 관계를 종단적으로 분석하고 구체적인 변화 궤적을 파악하여 아동기스마트폰 의존의 예방과 개입을 현실적으로 돕는 방안을 마련하는데 기여하고자하였다. 이를 위해 한국 청소년 정책 연구원에서 시행한 한국 아동･청소년 패널조사2018년 자료 중 1차년도(2018년), 2차년도(2019년), 3차년도(2020년) 자료를 활용하여 잠재성장모형 분석을 실시하였다. 특히 본 연구에서는 아동기 스마트폰 의존양상에 대해 알아보고자 초등학교 시점의 자료를 활용하였다. 이 중 2020년 기간은COVID-19 팬데믹의 발생과 확산이 이루어진 시기로, 급격한 사회적 변화가 장기적 목표 달성을 위한 열정과 노력을 의미하는 그릿의 발달 궤적에 미치는 영향을포착할 수 있다는 장점도 가지고 있다. 분석 결과, 초등학교 4~6학년 아동의 스마트폰 의존은 시간의 흐름에 따라 점차 높아지고 그릿 수준은 점차 낮아지는 것으로확인되었다. 또한 성별은 아동 스마트폰 의존과 그릿의 핵심적 예측 요인이 아니었으나 부모의 긍정적 양육태도는 스마트폰 의존과 그릿에 유의한 예측 요인으로나타났다. 아울러 초기 스마트폰 의존과 그릿은 부적 관계로 스마트폰 의존이 높으면 동일 시점에서 그릿 수준이 낮게 나타났다. 마지막으로 시간의 흐름에 따라스마트폰 의존이 빠르게 증가하는 아동일수록 그릿 수준은 느리게 증가하는 것으로 나타나, 스마트폰 의존과 그릿의 단순한 상호관계를 넘어 시간의 흐름에 따라두 변인의 변화 양상, 상호 영향력을 검증하였다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로향후 아동 스마트폰 의존에 대한 시사점과 후속 연구를 위한 제언을 논의하였다.

영어초록

This study aimed to examine the longitudinal change patterns of smartphone dependency and grit, as well as their longitudinal relationship, among 4th to 6th grade elementary school students. Since the onset of COVID-19, media usage among elementary school students has significantly increased, with a notable rise in smartphone dependency in recent years. Of particular concern is the impact of childhood smartphone dependence on the development of grit, which may hinder long-term goal setting and achievement. Given these implications, this study aims to conduct a longitudinal analysis of the relationship between smartphone dependence and grit, examining specific developmental trajectories. By identifying patterns of change, this research seeks to provide practical insights for the prevention and intervention of childhood smartphone dependence, ultimately contributing to more effective strategies for fostering resilience and long-term success in children. To achieve this, we conducted a latent growth model analysis using data from the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018) conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, specifically utilizing data from the first year (2018), second year (2019), and third year (2020). In particular, this study examines the patterns of childhood smartphone dependence using data collected from elementary school students. Notably, the period 2020 coincided with the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, a time of profound societal change. This context provides a unique opportunity to capture the impact of such abrupt shifts on the developmental trajectory of grit, which embodies perseverance and passion for long-term goals. The analysis revealed that smartphone dependence among 4th to 6th grade elementary school children gradually increased over time, while their level of grit gradually decreased. Additionally, gender was not a key predictor of children’s smartphone dependence, whereas positive parenting attitudes were found to be a significant predictor. Furthermore, initial smartphone dependence and grit showed a negative relationship, indicating that higher smartphone dependence at the initial stage was associated with lower grit levels at the same time point. Moreover, children whose smartphone dependence increased more rapidly over time showed a slower increase in grit levels, demonstrating a dynamic interplay between the two variables over time. This study thus confirmed not only the simple association between smartphone dependence and grit but also their longitudinal patterns of change and mutual influence over time. Based on these findings, implications for reducing smartphone dependence among children and suggestions for future research were discussed.
