탈이념 시대에 있어 교육이념 정립의 문제와 교육철학의 과제 (The Task of Philosophy of Education for Establishing Educational Ideals in Post-ideological Era)

초록

20세기 후반 이후 빠른 속도로 전개되고 있는 탈이념 시대는 가치의 임의성과 상대성을 강조하는 윤리적 상대주의와 주관주의 그리고 탈가치화와 함께 도덕적 무관심의 경향을 심화시키고 있다. 이러한 시대적 흐름 속에서 교육이론과 실천에 있어서도 가치중립성의 표방 하에 가치와 이념의 문제에 대한 관심과 논의가 위축되고 있다. 이 글은 탈이념 시대에 있어 나타나고 있는 탈가치화의 문제점을 살펴보고, 교육에 있어 이념과 가치의 문제는 가치중립적 관점에서 결코 무시되거나 배제될 수 없는 근원적인 문제이며, 가치중립성의 표방 하에 이루어지는 교육의 탈이념화와 탈가치화는 결국 교육을 교육외적 이념과 가치의 작용 하에 내맡기는 결과를 낳게 된다는 점을 지적하고 있다. 그리고 탈이념 시대에 있어 교육이념의 정립을 기하기 위해서는 가치기업으로서의 교육의 본질에 대한 인식을 새롭게 환기하고, 바람직한 교육에 대한 가치 논의를 활성화시켜야 한다는 점을 주장하고, 이를 위한 교육철학의 과제를 논하고 있다.

영어초록

In the postmodern 21st century we are observing a world without ideologies or better to say the post-ideological era which typifies a trenchant moral crisis and social disintegration caused by its relativistic ethical position, in which universal foundations of values and ideals are denied. The rush to ethical relativism inevitably leads to social indifferences to the moral deliberation and value discourses on quality of life and its excellence. In post-ideological era, it seems that there are incommensurable forms of life, and thus that anything goes.
Under these circumstances, what is missing in the spheres of educational research and practice is earnest and continuous discourses on the value dimensions of education, especially on educational ideals or value principles. Without such educational ideals and principles, we cannot engage meaningfully in worthwhile educational practice, nor in educational efforts for redressing moral laxity and disintegration of our society. The educational ideal of a society is the most important criterion of its quality of life and its excellence.
Education is a definitely value enterprise, for it aims to change the life of the young through pursuing intellectual and moral excellence. Thus, a keen interest in comprehensive, substantial, and justified educational ideals is fundamental to education even in the so-called post-ideological era. Without such an interest and ideals, education is inevitably exposed under the control of extrinsic values and ideals, such as economic or political ones.
This paper, primarily concerned with reaffirming the demand of educational ideals in the post-ideological era, tried to articulate the primacy of values and the nature of education as a value enterprise, to discuss the need of social discourses on educational ideals and value principles. Also it argues that philosophy of education should lead and vitalize public dialogues in order to establish educational ideals in our society in the post-ideological era.
