김우진 「이영녀」의 탈식민성 연구 (Postcoloniality of Kim U-jin's Literature in Light of Resistance and Appropriation)

초록

이 글은 김우진이 서구문학을 적극적으로 조선에 소개했다는 사실에 주목하면서, 김우진 문학의 탈식민적 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 일본 문화에 직접적 저항의 메시지를 표출했던 동시에, 서구문학의 수용을 ‘모방’과 ‘비판’으로 보았던 김우진의 문학이 탈식민적 가능성을 충분히 지니고 있음을 규명하고자 하는 것이다. 이러한 문제의식에 따라 이 글은 탈식민주의 이론의 중핵에 해당하는 ‘저항’과 ‘전유’의 측면에서 그의 문학을 분석하고자 한다.
김우진은 당시 조선에 성행했던 일본식 신극(신파극)을 강하게 비판하며 서구 근대극을 소개했다. 이 과정에서 그는 평론을 통해 일본문화를 비판하면서 ‘일본식’ 지식인들을 비난하고 있다. 일본문화에 동일화된 그들을 통해 창작된 문학과 신파극이 ‘속중’을 양산하고 있다고 보았다. 그의 희곡 「이영녀」는 식민제국의 이데올로기에 동화된 주체들을 비판함으로써 일본제국에 대한 저항의 메시지를 담고 있다. 이렇듯 그는 일본문화 및 식민제국의 이데올로기에 대한 반동일화의 기제로 서구문학을 수용하였다.
또 김우진은 서구 근대극을 전유한 작품을 창작함으로써 조선 근대극 수립을 모색하였다. 이 과정에서 서구 근대문명을 폐해를 적극적으로 알리고, 서구 근대와 변별되는 식민지 조선의 현실을 재현하고자 했다. 그는 탈식민적 전유가 차용한 작품과 다른 의미를 생산하여 식민지 조선의 현실을 드러내는 방식이라고 볼 때, 「이영녀」는 자신이 번역한 버나드 쇼의 「워렌부인의 직업」의 변용을 통해 차이를 드러내고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 차이는 서구 근대가 지닌 자본주의의 속악성이 1920년대 식민지 조선에 이르러 더욱 모순과 폭력성을 드러내고 있음을 암시하고 있다.
김우진은 식민주체인 일본의 문화와 그에 동화되는 지식인과 속중을 비판하였다. 그는 서구문학을 통해 식민주체인 일본문화에 저항하고, 조선 근대문학의 수립을 모색하였다. 자신의 희곡을 창작하면서 서구문학을 전유했고, 서구(문학)와의 비동일화를 통해 탈중심적이고 복수적이며 다층적인 경험의 공간으로 끌어들였다. 이렇게 볼 때, 김우진은 서구문학의 단순한 모방이나 복사를 넘어서 차이와 저항을 보였다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This writing aims to consider post-colonial significance in Kim U-jin's literature with paying attention to a fact that Kim U-jin positively introduced western literature to Joseon. The aim is to closely examine that Kim U-jin's literature, which had regarded acceptance of western literature as 'imitation' and 'criticism' as well as having expressed message of direct resistance to Japanese literature, has enough post-colonial possibility. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to analyze Kim U-jin's literature in the aspect of 'resistance' and 'appropriation,' which correspond to the central core of post-colonial theory.
Kim U-jin introduced western modern theater with strongly criticizing Japanese-styled Shingeuk(Shinpageuk), which had been prevalent in Joseon at that time. In this process, Kim U-jin is criticizing 'Japanese-styled' intellects who had entered after passing through Japan, while obviously criticizing on Japanese culture through critique. He saw that literature and Shinpageuk(신파극), which had been created through them as those who were identified into Japanese culture, are mass-producing 'Sokjung(俗衆: the common).' In addition, his drama <Iyeongnyeo(李永女)> criticizes the main subjects, which were assimilated with ideology of colonial empire, thereby containing message of resistance to Japanese colonial empire. In this way, Kim U-jin aimed to accept western literature as mechanism of anti-identification on Japanese culture and ideology of colonial empire.
Also, Kim U-jin sought for establishing modern theater of Joseon by creating a work with appropriation of the western modern theater, simultaneously with introducing and researching into western modern literature. In this process, he positively informed of the harmful effect in western modern civilization, and tried to revive the reality of colonial Joseon, which is discriminated from the western modern. When seeing it as a method of revealing the reality of colonial Joseon different from the western modern by producing a meaning different from the work that post-colonial appropriation borrowed, <Iyeongnyeo(李永女)> can be known to reveal its difference through transforming Bernard Shaw's <Mrs. Warren's Job> that was translated by himself. This difference is suggesting that Sokakseong(俗惡性) of capitalism, which is possessed by the western modern, is revealing more inconsistency and violent characteristic with reaching colonial Joseon in the 1920s.
Kim U-jin criticized Japanese culture, which is the colonial entity, and intellect and the common that are assimilated with it. He resisted Japanese culture, which is the colonial entity through the western literature, and further pursued establishment of modern literature in Joseon. He appropriated western literature while creating drama, and brings it to the space that is happened de-central, plural, and multi-layered experience, through non-identification with the West(literature). Seeing in this way, Kim U-jin can be said to have shown the difference and resistance beyond simple imitation or reproduction by accepting western literature.
