초록

유길준은 자신의 사상 전개와 실천에서 종교를 어떻게 자리매김하고 있었을까? 유길준에게 종교란 무엇이었는가라는 이 문제는 그의 정치, 도덕, 교육 등에 관해 두텁게 축적된 연구들과 비교하면 상대적으로 주목 받지 못해온 듯 보인다. 그 이유는 유길준이 ‘종교’를 근대 전환기에 새로 등장한 근대적 개념 용법으로 사용하면서도, 그 기본적인 의미에서는 정교일치적 ‘근본 가르침’을 견지했던 상황과 관계있다고 생각한다. 즉, 유길준이 종교를 ‘근본 가르침’으로 이해했다는 것은, 그의 종교 이해가 정교일치적 세계에서 국가, 정치, 도덕, 교육 등과 긴밀하게 연계되어 있었다는 것을 의미한다. 이런 상황이 그의 종교 이해를 개별 영역으로 검토할 적극적인 동기 부여를 어렵게 했을 가능성이 있을 것으로 추측된다. 하지만 이런 상황은 뒤집어 생각하면, 유길준에게 종교가 국가, 정치, 도덕, 교육 등의 근간으로 위치하는 것이었다는 의미가 된다. 그리고 그의 종교 이해에 중첩적으로 내재된 전통과 근대에 관한 사유가 국가, 정치, 도덕, 교육에 관한 전통과 근대를 둘러싼 사유들과 유기적으로 관계 맺으면서 전개되었음을 의미한다.
유길준은 줄곧 종교를 국가 명운에 결정적인 요소라고 생각하고 종교를 통해 조선의 자유와 독립을 지키고자 했다. 그렇게 종교를 국가와 불가분한 ‘근본 가르침’으로 이해하는 가운데, 종교의 원천과 의미를 성인=군주에 의한 인민 교화에서 점차 이동해 기독교적 신에 의한 영혼의 교도로 이해하기에 이르렀다. 그 변화는 종교의 속성 자체에 대한 이해와 더불어 정교의 일치와 분리, 종교의 자유 그리고 유교와 기독교를 둘러싼 사유와 모색에 의해 가능한 것이었다. 그 결과로 유길준이 제시한 유일 종교로서 기독교는 ‘구세주의 가르침’에 따라 영혼의 구원을 믿고 죽음을 불사하며 영혼의 일치단결로써 국가의 자유와 독립을 위해 싸우자고 한 점에서, 유교적 근본 가르침보다 더욱 근본적인 가르침을 의미하고 있었다. 기독교를 통해 불굴의 기상과 불사불멸의 정신을 추동하며, 기독교를 사회의 기초로 삼아 국민들이 연대해 싸울 것, 그 끝에 조선의 자유·독립이 있다고 유길준은 기대한 것이다.

영어초록

How did religion lie at the core of the development and practice of Yu Kil-chun’s ideologies? Compared to the numerous research studies on subjects such as politics, morality, and education, Yu’s pursuit for understanding religion has received relatively less attention. This is closely related to the fact that Yu accepted concept of religion through the society’s newly-emerged modern approach, with the transition into modern times, and interpreted his ideas as, essentially, ‘Fundamental Teachings’ as well. In other words, to say that Yu understood religion as a ‘Fundamental Teachings’ is to say that he believed that the issues of the state, politics, morality, and education were closely related in a world with unity of church and state. Such an interpretation would have most likely made it difficult to motivate efforts to understand religion in respect to each of these different issues, individually. On the other hand, this also means that religion was at the core of Yu’s understanding of the state, politics, morality, and education. By extension, the divisions of modernity and tradition found within Yu’s understanding of religion naturally align with the divisions of modernity and tradition that result from the state, politics, morality, and education.
Yu Kil-chun believed that religion was the critical factor in a nation’s fate, thus leading him to fight for and protect the freedom and independence of the Joseon through religion. In the midst of this understanding of religion as a ‘Fundamental Teachings,’ he gradually came to understand the meaning and origins of religion as the guidance of soul by God not the edification of the people by the sovereign or saint. This shift was possible not only by the understanding of religion itself, but by deep thoughts and explorations of separation or unity of church and state, religious freedom, and Confucianism or Christianity. In his later years, religion remained to him, toward freedom and independence of Joseon, which is still a long-cherished hope, as a tool for social integration and as a form of faith in salvation instilling the indomitable soul.
