현대문학에 나타난 ‘추(醜)의 미학’ 탐구의 필요성과 연구의 난점들 (The Necessity and Aporias to study the ‘Aesthetics of Ugliness’ in Modern Literature)

초록

이 글은 추의 미학의 탐구 필요성과 연구의 난점들에 초점을 맞추어 논의를 전개하고자 한다. 우선 연구의 동기와 필요성을 말해본다면 첫째는 우리 문학의 흐름이 1980년대 중반을 지나 2000년대에 이르는 동안 강력한 추의 미학의 경향성을 보인다는 점을 들 수 있다. 둘째는 그간 ‘미의 미학’을 강조해온 미학의 역사를 염두에 둘 때 고전미학의 저자들이야말로 추를 가장 경계 대상으로 삼았음을 유추해볼 수 있다. 이러한 고전 미학의 지향은 역설적이게도 추의 미학 연구에 대한 또 하나의 동기와 필요성을 간접적으로 자극하는 역할을 하였다.
이 글은 추의 미학에 대한 연구를 진행하면서 겪게 되는 난점을 다음 다섯 가지로 분류하여 제시하였다. ① 체계화를 저해하는 추의 편재성을 들 수 있다. ‘추의 미학’이 하나의 학문으로서 체계적 연구 대상이 되기 위해서는 일차적으로 그것을 유형화하는 작업이 선행되어야 함에도 불구하고 그것은 쉽게 분류되지 않는다. ② 추의 미학은 경험적 추와 인간 본성으로서 추를 다양하게 포괄하는 경향성을 지닌다. 경험적 추가 병든 사회로부터 생성된다면 인간 본성으로서의 추는 그 원인이 인간 자체에 있기 때문에 규정 불가능한 철학적 난제(aporia)라 할 수 있다.
③ 추의 미학이 지닌 상대적 속성은 그것을 향유하는 자의 반응이 서로 다를 수 있음을 뜻한다는 점에서 또 하나의 연구 난점이 될 수 있다. ④ 추의 미학에 대한 상대적 속성은 곧 추의 미학에 대한 가치 판정의 척도를 어렵게 하는 원인이기도 하다. 추의 미학 연구자가 가장 신중을 기해야 하는 대목은 바로 이 척도의 문제일 것이다. ⑤ 추의 미학은 현대예술의 가장 두드러진 경향성이기도 하지만 그것이 우리의 정서와 정념에 끼치는 영향을 진지하게 고려해야만 한다. 아울러 예술에 수용된 추가 모두 추의 미학으로서 가치를 갖는 것이 아님을 늘 상기하지 않으면 우리는 자칫 추의 추종자가 될 가능성이 있다. 따라서 미의 미학을 대하는 태도보다 더 냉철한 관점의 정립이 반드시 필요한 것으로 여겨진다.

영어초록

The aesthetics of ugliness is to be said to expose firmly what we conflict with or want to deny. Because the ‘ugliness’ involves a considerable amount of human truth to be undeniable. The artists who practice the aesthetics of ugliness are those who devote themselves to the ugliness just as we devote ourselves in everyday to the beauty. But it is actually not easy to evaluate this aesthetics of ugliness as an art. The necessity and aporias to study this aesthetics is discussed thus in this paper. The motive and necessity to study this aesthetics are summed up as follows. First, the Korean literature from 1980th to 2000th revealed a strong tendency of this aesthetics. Second, if the ‘aesthetics of beauty’ was emphasized by the aesthetic history in the same period, it could meant to thrust the ugliness out of the world of art. In other words, it is to be inferred that the authors of classic aesthetics indeed made the ugliness their most warning object. To read prudently Aristotle’s or Horace’s Poetics is to see how acutely they sensed the aesthetics of ugliness. This intention of classic aesthetics as an another motive suggests indirectly the necessity to study the aesthetic of ugliness.
The aporias to study the aesthetics of ugliness are classified as follows. (1) The ubiquity of ugliness hinders this aesthetics from systematizing. If this aesthetics becomes an object of systemic study as a discipline, the typification of ugliness must be done primarily, but it is difficult to classify the ugliness. This requests to grasp delicately the fused modes of ugliness in its context. (2) The aesthetics of ugliness has a tendency to comprehend diversely the empirical ugliness and the ugliness as human nature. While the empirical ugliness comes from the ill society, the ugliness as human nature is an indefinable aproia of philosophy because its origin is humanity itself. Though this aporia is a difficulty that must reserve continually its firm definition, it is important due to be a momentous point to draw a reflection on humanity. (3) The relativity of the aesthetics of ugliness is also an aporia due to signify that the persons may react differently to their enjoyment of this aesthetics. (4) The relativity of the aesthetics of ugliness also makes the measure of evaluation of this aesthetic a difficulty. This is the problem that requests the most careful attitude to study this aesthetics. (5) The aesthetics of ugliness is the most notable tendency of modern arts, but its influences on our emotions and passions must be considered seriously. Though this aesthetics is ultimately a paradoxical for the more significant human world, the disharmony and unbalance that its serious observer accumulates in himself are aporias that must be considered seriously. We may become nearly the followers of ugliness unless we always remind that all the ugliness in arts has not always its value as the aesthetics of ugliness. This requests thus necessarily to establish a colder perspective than the attitude to the aesthetics of beauty.
