사회운동의 미시적 결과와 정치화: 2008년 촛불집회 청소년 참여자의 분화와 변동을 중심으로 (The Micro-level Consequences of Social Movements and Politicization: Focusing on the Youth Participants in 2008 Candlelight Vigil)

초록

이 연구는 사회운동의 미시적결과에 관한 연구로서 사회운동 참여자들의 참여행동(activism)이 어떻게 변화하고 정치화되는가를 2008년 촛불집회에 참여한 10대 청소년 참여자를 중심으로 분석하였다. 2008년 촛불집회 참여자에 대한 현장조사 자료와 동일 응답자를 1년이 지난 후 추적조사한 3차례의 경험적 조사자료를 바탕으로 촛불집회가 10대 참여자에게 미친 결과들을참여행동의 분화와 변동의 측면에서 분석하였다. 분화의 측면은 참여정도의 차이에 따라 단순참여층, 중간참여층, 적극참여층 3집단으로 구분하여 집단별 특성을 살펴보았고, 변동의 측면은 사회운동의 결과에 대한 이탈, 후퇴, 충성, 저항의 네 가지 대응 유형으로 나누어 검토하였다.
분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 참여집단의 차이에도 불구하고 참여자들은 1년이 지난 시점에서 비교적 동질적인 촛불세대 집단 정체성을 견지하고 있었다. 둘째, 참여집단별 참여행동의 특성이 상이하게 분화되어 나타났다. 사회운동 참여의 결과가 참여층에 따라 동질적이지 않은 것이다. 적극참여층은 촛불집회가 종료된지 1년이 지났지만 여전히 매우 강도 높은 정치의식과 참여행동성을 보여주었다. 중간참여층은 참여행동의 지속성을 유지하면서 이념적 진보성을 보여주었다. 단순참여층은 일회적 참여에도 불구하고 시민의식과 민주주의를 학습하며 참여행동 성향을 간직하고 있다. 셋째, 사회운동의 불만족스러운 성과에 대한 대응에 따라 참여집단별 서로 다른 정치화 과정이 관찰되었다. 적극참여층은 높은 촛불세대 정체성과 행동성을 지닌 저항의 유형에 해당하며 실천적 행동가로서의 정치화를 보여주었다. 중간참여층은 이념적 정체성을 기반으로 계속된 지지를 보내는 충성 유형으로서 정체성의 정치화를 드러냈다. 단순참여층은 충성과 후퇴의 긴장 속에서 시티즌십의 정치화를 지속하고 있었다. 이처럼 사회운동 참여의 결과로서 2008년 촛불집회에 참여한 청 소년들은 참여층에 따라 다양하고 상이한 방식으로 정치화되었다.

영어초록

This study analyzed how the activism of the social movement participants changed and became politicized based on the teenagers participated in the 2008 candlelight vigils. Based on the field survey data of participants in 2008 candlelight gatherings and the empirical data traced the same respondents one year later, the microscopic results of the candlelight gatherings on the ten participants were analyzed in terms of differentiation and variation of participatory behavior. As for the aspect of differentiation, the characteristics of each group were divided into three groups according to the degree of participation: simple participation, middle participation, and active participation. The variance aspects were classified into four types of response: Exit, Neglect, Loyalty, and Voice.
The results of the analysis are as follows. First, despite the differences of the participating groups, the participants maintained relatively homogeneous collective identity of candles generations at the end of the year. Second, the characteristics of activism of different participant groups were differentiated. The results of participation in social movements are not homogeneous according to the participation level. The active participant showed a very intense political consciousness and activism even after one year of the candlelight vigil. The intermediate participants showed ideological progress while maintaining the persistence of activism. The simple participation group learns citizen's consciousness and democracy despite the one-time participation and keeps the tendency of participation behavior. Third, according to the response to the unsatisfactory performance of the social movement, different politicization process was observed for each participating group. The active participant is a type of Voice with a high candle generation identity and behavior and showed politicization as a practical actor. The Intermediate participants revealed the politicization of identity as a form of Loyalty that sustained support based on ideological identity. The simple participants continued to politicize the citizenship in the tension of Loyalty and Neglect. As a result of participating in 2008 candlelight vigils, the youth participants were politicized in various and different ways according to their participation levels.
