청소년동반자의 위기청소년 옹호활동 경험에 대한 내러티브 탐구 (A Narrative Inquiry of Youth Companion’s Experiences in Advocacy for At-risk Youth)

초록

본 연구는 청소년동반자가 상담을 하는 맥락 속에서 상담실 안과 밖을 넘나들며 위기청소년을 위해 옹호활동을 한 실제적인 경험을 청소년동반자의 이야기를 통해 살펴보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 Clandinin & Connelly(2000)가 제안한 내러티브 탐구 방법으로 연구를 진행하였고 연구 참여자의 경험을 3차원적 내러티브 탐구 공간(시간성, 사회성, 장소)에 위치시켜서 전개하였다.
탐구를 위해 설정한 연구퍼즐은 ‘청소년동반자의 위기청소년 옹호활동 경험은 어떠하며, 그 경험의 의미는 무엇인가’이다. 이를 위해 S시 청소년상담복지센터에 소속된 청소년동반자를 연구 참여자로 선정하였고, 2022년 4월부터 2023년 8월까지 내러티브 탐구 공간에서 살아가면서 옹호활동과 관련한 경험을 이야기하고 다시 이야기하였다.
연구 결과, 연구자는 연구 참여자의 옹호활동 경험을 ‘위기청소년의 심리적 안정과 환경 변화를 위하여 능동적으로 자신의 역할을 수행한 것’으로 이해하였고, 옹호활동 경험의 구체적 의미를 다음과 같이 구성하였다. 첫째, 차별과 소외를 당하는 위기청소년의 환경 변화를 위해 연구 참여자가 직접 사회적 자본 즉, 사회적 부모가 되어 능동적으로 개입함으로써 궁극적으로 위기청소년이 우울하고 불안한 심리적 어려움을 이겨내고 또래 집단 사이로 들어가는 변화를 이룰 수 있었다. 둘째, 상담실이라는 공간 너머에 있는 지역사회-체계 속으로 들어가서 이들과의 유기적인 협력과 동맹을 통해 위기청소년에게 필요한 자원을 발굴하고 연계하는 노력을 함으로써 위기청소년의 심리적 고통을 가중시켰던 환경과 체계의 변화를 이룰 수 있었다. 셋째, 청소년동반자라는 신분으로 활동하였으므로 고용이 안정적이고, 수익창출에 대한 부담이 없었으며, 청소년상담복지센터에 구축되어 있는 지역자원의 연계망을 활용할 수 있는 이점이 있었다.
본 연구 결과가 위기청소년을 조력하는 청소년동반자뿐만 아니라 청소년상담사의 옹호활동 교육 및 프로그램을 개발하기 위한 기초자료가 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the practical experience of youth companions’ advocacy activities inside and outside of the counseling room in the context of counseling. To this end, the study was conducted with the narrative inquiry method proposed by Clandinin & Connelly (2000), and the experiences of the research participants were placed and developed in a three-dimensional narrative inquiry space (temporality, sociality, place).
The research puzzle set for inquiry is ‘what did the research participants experience in advocacy activities as youth companions supporting at-risk youth and what is the meaning of that experience’. For this purpose, youth companions belonging to the Youth Counseling and Welfare Center of S city were selected as research participants, and from April 2022 to August 2023, they talked about and retold their experiences related to advocacy while living in a narrative inquiry space.
As a result of the study, it was found that the meaning of the advocacy experience of the research participants, who are the youth companions, is ‘the active role performance for the psychological stability and environmental change of the at-risk youth’ and structured the specific meaning of the advocacy experience as follows. First, in order to change the environment of at-risk youth who suffer discrimination and alienation, research participants actively intervene by becoming social capital, i.e., social parents, ultimately helping at-risk youth overcome their depressed and anxious psychological difficulties and make changes enter in their peer group. Second, by entering into the community-system beyond the space of the counseling room and making efforts to discover and connect the resources needed for the at-risk youth through interact cooperation and alliance with them, the environment and system that increased the psychological distress of the at-risk youth could be changed. Third, because they worked as youth companions, they had the advantage of stable employment, no burden of earning an income, and the ability to utilize the network of local resources established at the Youth Counseling and Welfare Center.
It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as basic data for advocacy training and developing programs for youth counselors as well as companions youth who assist at-risk youth.
