에지뻬르쩨쉬 단편집(Egyperces Novellák)의 번역관련 문제와 대안적인 번역 방법에 대한 연구 (On the alternative in translating Egyperces Novellák into foreign languages)

초록

외르께늬 이슈뜨반(Örkény István, 1912-1979)의 에지뻬르쩨쉬 단편집(Egyperces Novellák)은 극히 짧은 형식의 글들을 엮어서 출판된 초단편 소설 모음집이라 할 수 있다. 이 소설집에 수록된 어떤 작품(<백지(白紙, Üres lap)>)은 본문내용이 전혀 없이 짧은 주석으로만 구성되어 극단적인 형식을 취하기도 하며, 또 다른 작품들 역시 극히 짧은 소설, 신문기사의 스크랩, 일화, 시 등으로도 이루어져 있는데 출간 이후 헝가리 문학에서는 이 소설집의 명칭에서 유래한 '에지뻬르쩨쉬'라는 장르가 탄생하게 될 정도로 문학사적 의의를 가지고 있다. 이러한 문학형식의 독창성은 외르께늬가 독점할 수 있는 것이 아니라고 할지라도, 극히 적은 정보를 담고 있는 작품 속에서 역사, 사회, 정치를 포함한 큰 담론을 논하고 있다는 점에서 다른 작가들의 초단편 작품들과는 분명한 차별성을 둬야 할 것이다.
본고는 에지뻬르쩨쉬 단편집(Egyperces Novellák)의 번역에 관한 문제점을 살펴보고, 문제점들의 극복방안으로서 번역 방법론적 대안을 살펴보는데 그 목적이 있다. 앞서 언급한 바, 극단적으로 짧은 형식미를 특징으로 하고 있는 '에지뻬르쩨쉬'는 창작 당시의 헝가리 사회와 헝가리 독자들에게 던져진 짧은 메시지였지만 그 긴 파장을 이해하기 위해서는 해석과 작품의 배경 설명에 지극히 많은 지면의 할애가 필요하다. 더군다나 다른 인식환경(kognitív környezet)을 가진 번역문의 수용자들에게 에지뻬르쩨쉬의 특징인 형식미를 해치지 않고 온전한 의미를 전달해야 하는 번역은 번역 그 자체가 아이러니한 상황이라고도 할 수 있을 것이다. 여기서는 어떤 번역이론, 커뮤니케이션의 담론도 그 적용의 예외를 인정할 수밖에 없는데, 본고에서는 이러한 해석의 방법, 번역의 방법으로 '메타에지뻬르쩨쉬(metaegyperces)'라는 용어를 창안하여 하나의 대안으로 제시하고자 한다. 메타에지뻬르쩨쉬는 메타적인 방법으로 에지뻬르쩨쉬를 해석, 번역하는 방법으로서 하나의 독립적 작품인 짧은 에지뻬르쩨쉬들을 하나의 큰 메시지를 주는 연작으로 엮어서 독자들이 전체의 메시지를 이해할 수 있도록 도우는 것이다. 에지뻬르쩨쉬로서 에지뻬르쩨쉬를 설명, 해석 가능하게 하는 방법에 착안하여 메타에지뻬르쩨쉬라는 용어를 제시하게 되었으며, 이는 에지뻬르쩨쉬 뿐만 아니라 문학작품의 해석을 비롯하여 번역활동 전반에 적용이 가능한 하나의 대안이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다. 논문의 구체적인 내용은 우선 번역의 이론적인 내용으로 오랫동안 논란이 되고 있는 번역가능성(fordíthatóság, translatability)과 번역불가능성(fordíthatatlanság, untranslatability), 등가성(ekvivalencia, ecquivalence)에 대한 고찰, 그리고 맥락(kontextus, context)에 대한 이론을 중심으로 한 적합성이론(Relevancia-elmélet, relevance theory)을 살펴보면서 에지뻬르쩨쉬 단편집(Egyperces Novellák)에 적용 가능한 부분과 적용 불가능한 점을 요약해 보았다. 또한 한 장(章)을 할애하여 에지뻬르쩨쉬의 번역을 특히 어렵게 하는 요소를 살펴보았는데, 이를 초단편으로서의 장르적 문제점, 작품 내에 나타나는 아크로니-아나크로니(achrónia-anachrónia, achrony-anachrony), 마지막으로 복합적인 문학적 경향으로 세분하였다. 특히 복합적인 문학적 경향으로는 아이러니(irónia, irony), 베르그송의 희극론(Bergsoni komikumelmélet, Henri Bergson’s theory of the comic), 역설(Paradoxon, paradox), 사실성-비사실성(realitás-irrealitás, reality-irreality)의 혼재, 그로테스크(groteszk, grotesque), 부조리 문학(abszurd irodalom, literature of the absurd)적 경향 등을 들고 각각의 예시와 함께 차례로 살펴보았다. 전술한 번역의 이론적인 면과 에지뼤르쩨쉬의 여러 가지 특성으로 인해 번역시 발생하는 문제점들에 대해 메타에지뻬르쩨쉬를 그 방법적 대안으로 본고에서 제안해 보았다. 이러한 메타에지뻬르쩨쉬의 이론적인 배경과 그 기대효과로서 소격효과(elidegenítő effektus, Verfremdungseffekt), 해석학적 순환(Hermeneutikai kör, Hermeneutic circlr), 능동적 번역(aktív fordítás, active translation), 기대지평(elváráshorizont, Erwartungshorizont), 수용미학(recepcióesztétika, rezeptionsästhetik), 독자-반응비평(olvasóközpontú kritika, reader-response criticism)을 고찰해 보았으며, 에지뻬르쩨쉬 단편집(Egyperces Novellák)의 번역에 있어 메타에지뼤르쩨쉬 적용의 실례도 함께 살펴보았다.

영어초록

According to Kosztolány Dezső, translation of belles-lettres can be compared with running with a sack on his/her backor dancing with a tightly-tied hog. Kosztolány seems to put an emphasis on the given circumstances which are restricted by source language (SL), especially in case of the translation of belles-lettres. when a writer translates some form of work into other languages, the wording of the writer’s social and political difference can be inluded the above restricted circumstances in addition to something which can be occurred from SL itself." But in the case of Örkény István Egyperces Novellák, I presume that other inevitable problems can happen even if this work is translated with the help of the most advanced theory of translation. The core problem among them is related with a fact that Örkény’s Egyperces Novellák is made up of extremely brief stories. Egyperces’ concise and compendious style on the external side is in parallel with its hidden meaning on the internal side. And these dual aspects cause a translator difficult to choose and apply almost all the theories concerned with translation. On the other side, thanks to these aspects, Örkény István Egyperces Novellák, can be explained as unique and characteristic.
In this paper I would like to present another alternative which is named metaegyperces. This is a way regarding another translation of Egyperces with being preserved with SL’s messages, even though this work consists of extremely brief stories. In short, metaegyperces means that theres are some clues to transmit to other languages in the work itself. When this is applied to Egyperces, Egyperces itself gets involved in other fragmented egyperceses. Accordingly, a writer who would like to translate Egyperces into other languages, needs to focus not on each separated egyperces, but on the view point of every whole angle. Therefore, when story tellings get more entangled, the each and every incident can be much more classified and coordinated into the bigger spectrum.
This paper consists of three parts except introduction and abstract. In the first part, I wrote about the translatablility/untranslatabliity, equivalence, and relevant theories concerned with Egyperces within general categories of translation. In the second part, I picked up some factors which may cause difficulties when the Egypeces is translated into other languages. These factors shown in Egyperces I summarized are Achrony & Anachrony, A short short story as a genre, A complex literary tendency including irony, Bergson’s theory of the comic, paradox, reality-unreality and its boundary, grotesque, and absurd literature. In the third part, I presented another alternative-metaegyperces, and I wrote about some theoretical backgrounds regarding it. And in this part, I also wrote about the effects of metaegyperces and its theoretical background as a subsection: V-effect, hermeneutic circle, active translation, expectation horizon, aesthetics of reception, reader-response criticism.
Metaegyperces isn’t only the unique way to solve all the problems we can imagine when the Egyperces is translated. What I emphasize in this paper is Metaegyperces is another way possible to translate Egyperces.
