부모의 학대적 양육과 청소년의 낮은 자기통제력이 청소년기 사회심리적 적응에 미치는 직·간접적 영향과 성차: 한국과 미국 비교 연구 (Developmental Pathways to Adjustment Problems in Adolescents: A Comparative Study between Korea and the United States)

초록

본 연구는 한국와 미국 부모의 학대적 양육이 청소년기 사회심리적 적응에 미치는 직접적 그리고 청소년의 낮은 자기통제력을 통한 간접적 영향을 살펴보고, 이러한 발달적 경로가 성별에 따라 차이가 있는지 그리고 한국과 미국의 청소년에게서 동일한 패턴으로 나타나는지 비교하였다. 본 연구는 한국아동·청소년패널조사(KCYPS) 초4패널의 6차년 조사(만 15세)에 참여한 2,061명(여자 970명)의 2차-6차년도 자료와 미국 Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study(FFCWS)의 6차년도 조사(만 15세)에 참여한 3,437명(여자 1,676명)의 5차-6차년도의 자료를 사용하였다. 한국과 미국의 남학생 및 여학생 모두 아동기 부모의 학대적 양육이 청소년기 음주 및 흡연의 경험, 우울과 학교생활적응에 미치는 영향이 청소년 자신의 낮은 자기통제력을 통해 매개되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 부모의 학대적 양육은 한국 남학생의 우울, 한국 여학생의 학교생활적응, 그리고 미국 여학생의 우울과 학교생활적응에 직접적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 청소년의 적응에 영향을 미치는 요인들의 장기적 영향에 대해 분석하였고, 성별과 국가별에 따른 발달경로를 종단적으로 살펴봄에 따라 청소년의 건강한 적응을 위한 방향을 제시할 수 있는 기초자료를 제공하였다.

영어초록

Adjustment problems during adolescence are linked to a variety of detrimental outcomes throughout adulthood and even across generations. The present study examined that long term-effects of harsh parenting in early childhood on adolescents' adjustment problems (the onset of alcohol and smoking, depressive symptoms, and poor school adjustment). Additionally, the present study examined whether the link between harsh parenting and adolescents' outcomes would be mediated through their poor self-regulation and whether such mediating path would differ by gender and between adolescents from Korea and the United States. The Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) data on 2,061 adolescents (girls n=970) and the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) on 3,437 (girls n=1,676) were analyzed. Findings suggested that the developmental pathways from harsh parenting to alcohol and smoking, depressive symptoms and school adjustment through poor self-regulation were significant for both Korean and US adolescents. It was also found that the direct path from harsh parenting to depressive symptom was significant for Korean boys and US girls only and that the direct path from harsh parenting to school adjustment was significant for both Korean and US girls. These findings support the hypothesized mediation model, highlighting the significance of early childhood parenting and youth's self-regulation skills for adjustment during adolescence. This study is one of the first studies to examine cross cultural generalizability of youth's development pathways using longitudinal data from Korea and the US. The present study suggests that preventive intervention programs that are specifically aimed at reducing harsh parenting and promoting self-regulation may effectively prevent adjustment problems among youth in both countries.
