평생 수도원의 고요함 속에서 진리를 관상하는 하느님의 종으로 살고자 염원하던 아우구스티누스에게 있어 391년 히포에서의 사제서품은 분명 삶의 전환점이 되는 사건이었다. 그는 개인적인 유익보다 복음의 요구를 우선시하면서 하느님의 백성에 대한 봉사를 요구한 교회의 부름에 온전히 응답하였다. 교회에 대한 온전한 헌신과 봉사를 요구하는 사제의 삶은 본질적으로 겸손과 사랑이라는 두 축으로 구성된다. 교회의 사람인 영혼의 목자가 사랑으로 생기를 얻고 겸손으로 충만해야 한다는 것이다. 이러한 조건에서 영혼의 목자는 기도로 무장되고 정결과 청빈을 사랑할 수 있으며 또한 말씀의 선포자요 성사 집전자로서 참되게 자리매김 할 수 있다. 그의 직무가 자신을 온전히 희생한 그리스도의 직무의 연장이요 그에 대한 참여이기 때문이다. 백성 위에 으뜸이 된다는 것은 무엇보다 종이 되는 것이다. 거룩한 겸손함을 갖춘 사람이 되어야 하는 것이다. 이러한 겸손함은 진리이신 그리스도 앞에 서 있는 인간의 존재론적 모습으로, 직무를 맡기에 부당하지만 그리스도에 의해 선발되었다는 측면과 그리스도의 모범을 따른다는 측면으로 이루어진다.
이러한 겸손이 사랑의 길이라는 측면에서 주님의 양떼를 돌보는 사제의 직무는 사랑의 직무가 된다. 양떼를 위해 자신의 목숨마저도 바치는 측면과 자신의 만족이나 명예와 같은 것이 아닌 오직 그리스도의 것을 찾는 것으로 이루어지는 사랑의 직무를 성실히 수행할 때 삯꾼이 아닌 참된 목자가 된다. 이 때 목자는 사랑의 의무가 부과하는 여러 사도직 활동을 받아들인다. 이토록 겸손과 사랑이라는 두 축으로 이루어지는 사제직은, 진리를 선포하는 사제 역시 진리로 채워져야 하는 사람임을 분명하게 드러낸다. 다른 말로 한다면, 진리에 대한 관상과 사랑의 직분인 활동의 조화가 사제 안에서 이루어져야 한다는 것이다. 바로 이것이 아우구스티누스가 관상의 삶의 영역에 활동적인 삶을 결합하여 탄생시킨 사목직 수행을 통한 관상생활이라는 새로운 전망이다.

For Augustine, who aspired to live his entire life as a servant of God contemplating the truth in the serene silence of the monastic life, his priestly ordination in the year 391 in Hippo definitely served as the turning point of his life. He gave priority to what demanded by the Gospel over his personal benefit, he fully answered to the call of the Church, who insisted him to serve the people of God. The complete devotion to the Church and the life of priest that demands humble service are essentially composed by two axes which are the humility and the charity. Hence, the shepherd of souls, who belongs to the Church, should achieve his vitality by love and be filled with humility. Under these conditions, the shepherd of souls could be fortified by prayer, love poverty and chastity, and truly become the proclaimer of the Word as well as a minister of the sacraments. Because his ministry is an extension of the ministry of Christ, who sacrificed himself completely, and his ministry is also a participation in Christ’s ministry. Whoever becomes the greatest among the people, is to become the servant. Thus, he should be the one with sublime humility. Therefore such humility is composed two aspects, one of which is the selection by Christ regardless of injustice to take his office due to the ontological form of human being who stands before Christ, the truth and the second aspect is the pursuit of the example of Christ.
The ministry of the priest is to look after Lord's flock there by becoming a ministry of charity, for the reason that humility is the path of love. The priest becomes a true shepherd, not a hireling, when he faithfully dedicates himself to the ministry of charity, which is composed of aspects to even lay down his own life for his flock and to seek only Christ and not himself, such as his own satisfaction or his honor. Presently, shepherds accept various ministries that are imposed by the duties of charity. The priesthood, which is comprised of humility and charity as clarified above, distinctly disclose the fact that the priest, who proclaims the truth, should also be filled with the truth. On the other hand, the harmony of the contemplation upon the truth and the activities based on the ministry of charity should be achieved within the priest himself. And this is the new prospect of the contemplative life practiced through the pastoral ministry, which St. Augustine developed by combining active life with the sphere of the contemplative life.
