초록

The concept of “New Women” is made in the discourses in early 1920's in Korea after being imported by the young Korean women studying in Japan. The first generation as female writers and the leaders of new women group are Rha Hea-seog, Kim Il-yeob, and Kim Myong-sun. all of those studied abroad. Their reviews and works of literature show us the point of new women's maintenances. This thesis mainly analyzes all kinds of those works.
The “new women” means the educated women and the modernized ladies. In the long history of Confucian patriarchal system. Korean women exist as others being pushed to the periphery of history and male-oriented reality of society(including Japanese colonallism). Although the colonial modernity enforced by Japan, Korean modern civilization project can be said actually functioned as a driving force of creating sense of the new women.
In the modern history of Korea that is the first time to the public field of discourses to be called women collectively as beneficiaries education in the age of the civilization. The domain discourses which are male- oriented regard as women should be “hyun-cheo-yang -mo”s which mean wise wives and nice moms. The idea of “hyun-choe-yang-mo” is the policy of women's education in the whole colonial period in Korean peninsula. But the new women learn what is the value and how to live as women from reading books. For example, there are Love and Marriage by Ellen Key, The New Women by Alexandra Kolontai, The House of Doll by Henrik lbsen, and novels about love stories or romantic stories. Those are most popular books to the new women. They were fascinated by those books and were infatuated with occidental romances and civilizations, But the most important thing that they learned from those kinds of books is how to be subjects of their lives.
