정신지체아의 행동조정과 언어적 역할에 관한 고찰 -Luria 이론을 중심으로- (The Discussion on Verbal Mediation of Behavior in Mental Retardation by Luria's Theory)

초록

Alexander Luria는 50년이 넘는 그의 연구기간을 인간의 정신과정 및 정신지체에 관한 연구에 거의 다 바쳤다. 그는 정신지체아동과 일반아동의 인지기능의 발달에 관한 연구뿐만 아니라 쓰기와 수의적(隨意的) 동작의 발달, 뇌손상을 입은 환자의 지적능력의 결함, 눈의 움직임 기능, 기억력 장애 그리고 다양한 문화 환경에 따른 사고과정에 대해 연구를 했다.
Luria는 다양한 분야에서 깊이 있게 연구를 하였지만 그의 전 연구영역이 1920~30년대에
Vygotsky와 공동 연구한 단일개념 틀(single conceptual framework)의 범위를 넘어서지 못하는 것 같다. 이 틀은 Luria의 정신지체에 관한 행동과 언어발달 연구를 포함한 전 연구의 목적, 가정 및 방법론에까지 영향을 미쳤다.
여기서는 정신지체아의 행동조정에 미치는 언어적 중재에 관한 연구들을 개관하여 두 가지 관점에서 Luria의 연구와 그의 입장을 고찰하였다.
첫째는 발달적 측면으로 Vygotsky의 개념적 틀에 기초해 Luria의 정신지체에 관한 행동과 언어 연구를 조망해 보는 것이고, 둘째는 비교적 측면으로 정신지체에 관한 Luria의 견해와 Zigler의 견해를 비교해 보는 것이다. 사실 발달론과 차이론 두 이론은 다 장점을 가지고 있기 때문에 15년 이상이나 활발하게 연구되어 졌다. 따라서 이 고찰을 통하여 양 이론에 대한 우열을 가리기보다 정신지체를 보다 잘 이해할 수 있는 구조적 틀이 제공될 수 있다.

영어초록

Alexander Luria's studies in mental retardation can best be understood and appreciated within the context of his whole life's work. During a career that spanned over 50 years, Luria devoted himself to the study of higher mental processes in human beings. He examined the development of cognitive functioning in nonhandicapped and intellectually handicapped children, the development of writing and voluntary movements, disturbances of intellectual capacities in patients with brain lesions, eye-movement mechanisms, mnemonic disorder, and variations in thinking across different cultures. As broad and varied as was the scope of Luria's work, his thinking in all of these areas was unified under a single conceptual framework, which derived from his collaboration with Lev S. Vygotsky in the 1920s and 30s. This framework inspired the goals, hypotheses, and methodology of most of Luria's lifetime research, including his studies in mental retardation.
I discuss Luria's investigations and views concerning mental retardation from two different perspectives. The first is a developmental perspective, tracing the evolution of Luria's thought and work in mental retardation from Vygotsky's conceptual framework. The second is a comparative perspective, relating Luria's difference and Zigler's developmental views on mental retardation. The fact that the developmental-difference controversy has been a lively and viable one for over 15 years indicates that both viewpoints have particular merits. Thus, by focusing on the underlying conceptual sources of the controversy, it is hoped that the strengths and weaknesses of each viewpoint are uncovered, thereby providing a structural framework that could lead to a more complete and better understanding of mental retardation.
