초록

The Korean churches began its movement starting 1960’s. It grew rapidly entering 1970’s, and in 1980’s, it made a remarkable church revival of over ten million believers. But entering 1990’s,the church growth began to show a declining curve and in 2000’s,it either made a staggering or minus growth and the number of believers lowered to 8.5 million.
Although churches gather various evangelism methods to grow churches again, the reality is that there is no particular alternative available.
According to the survey of 14,000 people conducted by Institute for Church Growth on the topic of Which Method Maximize Church Growth, personal evangelism by friends, relatives, and neighbors make up 75 to 90 percents.
The survey is classified into different categories: 1) relation evangelism by friends, relatives, and neighbors makes up 75 to 90percents 2) pastors makes up 5 to 6 percents 3) Sunday schools makes up 4 to 5 percents 4) church programs makes up 2 to 3 percents 5) 2-3% through volunteer walk-in makes up 2 to 3percents 6) house visits makes up 1 to 2 percents 7) special needs makes up 1 to 2 percents 8) evangelism conferences makes up 0.5percents.
Personal evangelism is a method used by Jesus Christ two thousand years ago, and it is the last alternative of evangelism for this era.
Personal evangelism was present in the Old Testament. Eliezel,a servant of Abraham did personal evangelism to Rebecca and her elder brother Laban in Paddan Aram, Joseph who was sold to Egypt by his own brothers did to the government officials who committed sins and imprisoned and the King Pharaoh, the girl captivated to Aram did to the Commander Naaman who was suffering from leprosy, and prophets also did personal evangelism.
In the New Testament, Jesus came to the earth as a messiah and showed a good example of personal evangelism through his public life.
Jesus gathered twelve disciples through personal evangelism, and saved Nicodemus who visited him at night, the woman who was living in Sychar but walked to Jacob’s well to draw water,Zaccheus, a short and reach chief tax collector who wanted to meet Jesus passing through Jericho through personal evangelism.
When Jesus was doing personal evangelism, he used methods of choice, contact, seizing opportunity, assurance on the truth, and power.
Whether it is an alternative for church growth, evangelism, or anything else, the answer is the bible and Jesus Christ. Many churches and pastors are tired of, exhausted by, and fed up by numerous church growth programs flooding churches and yet, do not last, various evangelism programs and strategies.
The last way for Korean churches to revive is personal evangelism that Jesus Christ set a good example of. I only hope and pray that Korean churches revive applying personal evangelism that Jesus showed to us instead of wasting time and energy looking for alternatives from far away.
