<설저전>의 서사적 특성과 창작의식 (Narrative Characteristics and Creative Consciousness of Seol Jeo Jeon)

초록

이 글은 지금까지 <설저전>에 대한 연구가 작품의 외부적 환경을 중심으로 진행되어 왔음을 문제로 삼고, 작품 자체가 내재하고 있는 서사적 특성에 집중하여 창작의식을 들여다보는 데 목적을 두었다. 그 결과 <설저전>은 세 가지 서사적 특성을 기반으로 독특한 서사세계를 창출해냈음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이 작품은 ‘파괴된 질서와 여성의 수난’을 통해 남성에 의해 파괴된 질서 속에서 당대 여성들이 겪었을 법한 겁탈과 늑혼을 주요하게 다루었으며, 그러한 상황 속에서 ‘무능한 남성과 강인한 여성’의 모습을 극단적으로 대비시켜 가정과 국가에서 아무런 역할을 하지 못하는 남성의 형상을 효과적으로 그려냈다. 그리고 ‘여성에 의한 삼강의 실현’을 통해 여성들이 유교질서의 기본 강령을 시현함으로써 남성에 의해 파괴된 사회질서를 회복해 나가는 모습을 담아냈다. 이러한 사실들을 고려하면 <설저전>이 당대 사회의 한계와 모순을 보여주고자 한 작품임을 어렵지 않게 짐작할 수 있다.
실상 <설저전>은 전후 강상이 무너져 가던 17세기 조선의 현실을 고스란히 담아내고 있었다. 작품 속에서 초지일관 나약하고 무능한 모습을 보이는 남성은 전란 때 목격되었던 사대부 남성의 실체와 크게 다르지 않았다. 또한 사대부 남성의 욕망과 무능으로 사회질서가 파괴되어 가는 모습은 전후 혼란을 수습하지 못하고 헝클어져만 가는 17세기 조선의 현실과도 닮아 있었다. 그리고 이러한 모습을 보여준 <설저전>이 전란의 상처로 인해 강상이 급속도로 무너져 갔던 17세기 후반에 창작되었음을 확인할 수도 있었다. 이러한 일련의 사실들은 17세기 전후 강상이 무너진 조선에서 고통 받을 수밖에 없었던 여성의 모습이 <설저전>에서 권신의 횡포로 인해 수난을 겪는 여성의 모습으로 구현되었음을 추정케 한다. 이는 곧, <설저전>이 전후 강상이 무너져 가는 세태에 대한 여성의 걱정과 불안을 형상화였음을 의미한다.
흥미로운 지점은 <설저전>이 전후 강상이 무너진 세상에서 여성들이 고통 받을 수밖에 없는 이유를 여성의 삶을 억압하는 가족질서나 사회질서에서 찾지 않는다는 데 있다. 오히려 이 작품은 전후 사회의 문제를 가족질서나 사회질서 속에서 자신의 의무를 저버린 남성의 행태에서 찾고 있다. 실상 작품 속에서 남성들은 자신에게 부여된 의무를 저버림으로써 가족질서․사회질서의 파탄을 초래하고, 여성들은 자신이 처한 위치에서 유교적 기본 강령을 충실히 시현함으로써 파탄된 가족질서․사회질서를 재건한다. 이는 <설저전>이 입으로 유교윤리의 강화를 통해 전후 사회의 위기를 극복하자고 하면서도 실제로 폭력만 일삼고 무능한 모습만을 보여준 당대 사대부 남성에 대한 불신을 담아내고 ‘군위신강’․‘부위자강’․‘부위부강’ 등의 유교질서를 더욱 공고히 하여 강상이 무너진 전후 사회의 위기를 극복하고자 했음을 의미한다. 결국 <설저전>은 상당히 보수적인 입장에서 전후 사회의 위기를 비판적으로 진단하고 해결방안을 제시한 작품이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study aimed to investigate the of Seol Gyeong Jeon by problematizing that studies of Seol Jeo Jeon till now had been conducted around the environment outside of the work rather than the creative characteristics inside of the work and revealing the narrative characteristics of the work itself. As a result, in Seol Jeo Jeon, three narrative characteristics could be found. This work importantly dealt with rape and marriage by force that women of the times might suffer in the order destroyed by men through ‘the destroyed order and women’s suffering,’ and in such a problem situation, by describing ‘incompetent men and strong women’ extremely, it effectively expressed men who abandoned their own duties at home and in the country. In addition, it showed women’s restoration of the destroyed social order through defending the Confucian ideology through ‘the realization of the three basic principles by women.’ Considering these narrative characteristics, Seol Jeo Jeon is a work that embodied the limitations and contradictions of the man-centered social order.
An interesting fact is that Seol Jeo Jeon illustrated the reality of the 17th century Joseon, in which postwar moral principles were collapsing, as it was. In the work, men who show weak and incompetent attitudes from beginning to end were not very different from the reality of the scholar-gentry men during the wars, and the collapse of the social order due to their’ desire and inability looked very much after the reality of Joseon in the 17th century, when the postwar confusions were not resolved, and the situations got tangled. In addition, Seol Jeo Jeon that showed this was written in the late 17th century, when the wounds of war remained intact, so moral principles rapidly collapsed. Women who could not but suffer from pains in Joseon, where the 17th-century postwar moral principles collapsed, were embodied as those who were faced with an ordeal because of the tyranny of influential vassals in the work. To sum up a series of phenomena like this, it is noted that Seol Jeo Jeon embodied women’s distress and anxiety about the social conditions in which the postwar moral principles were collapsing.
In addition, Seol Jeo Jeon presented ‘the realization of the three basic principles in human relations by women with the workarounds for restoring the destroyed order, which was an attempt to overcome the crisis of the Joseon society in the 17th century. However, focusing on the inverted gender roles and obligations of men and women in Seol Jeo Jeon can find that the author of this work sharply captured the society of the times. In the work, men are described as people who always destroy the social order with violence and indifference while women are people who restore the destroyed order by defending the basic doctrine of Confucian ideology. Like this, in the work, the inversion of the gender roles and obligations of men and women is judged to be the writer’s intention to reveal the hidden face of the men that tried to overcome the crisis of the Joseon society only by mouth through strengthening Confucian ethics at the time. Therefore, Seol Jeo Jeon, superficially, shows the overcoming of the crisis of the society of the times as a measure for further strengthening Confucian ethics; however, it seems that it embodied mistrust and ridicule about the scholar-gentry man who just disturbed the postwar social order.
