초록

이 논문은 영웅소설 도식성의 서사적 변주라는 측면에서 『금방울전』과 『김원전』을 살펴보고, 금령과 김원의 영웅 형상화 방식의 의미를 고찰한 것이다. 『금방울전』, 『김원전』의 서사구조는 작품 전체적으로 영웅의 일대기를 따르지만, 난생설화, 지하국대적퇴치설화등을 수용하여 도식적 전개에서 벗어나고 있다. 『금방울전』과 『김원전』에서는 주인공의어린 시절 ‘기아(棄兒)와 위기 극복’에서 난생설화를 수용하여 형태 변이를 통한 ‘비인간에서 인간으로 전환’이 나타난다. 주인공이 비범한 능력으로 영웅성을 입증하는 과정은 지하국대적퇴치설화를 수용하여 요괴퇴치에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 대부분의 영웅소설에서 역모, 전쟁 등 현실 질서의 위기 극복이 나타나는 것과는 다른 방식이다.
금령과 김원은 천상계로부터 능력을 부여받았음에도 온전한 영웅의 면모를 드러내지못한다. 금령은 초월적 능력을 지녔지만 비인간의 형상으로 태어나서 부모와 주변의 외면을 받고, 형태 변이 이후에는 초월적 능력을 발휘하지 못하고 가정 내의 존재로 한정된다. 김원은 적강한 존재이지만 비인간의 형상으로 태어났기 때문에 가족과 사회로부터 격리된다. 김원은 형태 변이와 천서(天書) 수학 이후에 비범한 능력을 획득하지만, 조력자의 도움없이 요괴를 퇴치하지 못하고, 지하 세계 탈출 이후에는 일상적 존재에게 무기력하게 죽임을 당한다.
『금방울전』, 『김원전』은 도식화된 영웅서사를 탈피하기 위하여 설화를 수용하고, 이 과정에서 체제수호적 영웅과 설화적 인물이 혼종된다. 금방울전 에서는 설화적 상상력을수용하여 금령을 비인간의 형상을 지닌 내조형 여성 영웅으로 형상화하고, 국가 질서를 수호하는 전형적 영웅의 역할은 남편 해룡이 수행한다. 이러한 서사적 타협은 영웅소설의 장르 관습을 유지하면서 서사적 변주를 추구하는 서사 전략이라 할 수 있다.
『김원전』은 민담의 탐색 영웅을 수용하여 전형적 영웅을 변주하려고 하였지만, 탐색 영웅의 요괴퇴치 서사는 기존 영웅서사와 중복되어 서사적 차별성이 뚜렷하게 나타나지 않았다. 그래서 재생담을 삽입하여 서사적 변주를 시도한 것이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 주인공의 무기력한 죽음, 신화적 존재의 현실 개입에 의한 재생은 영웅의 주도적 과업 성취라는영웅소설의 장르 관습과 서사적 충돌을 일으킨다. 김원전 에 나타난 장르 문법의 충돌은여러 서사 요소의 병렬적 나열과 인과관계가 불분명한 갈등 해결로 나타난다.
『금방울전』과 『김원전』은 설화적 상상력을 수용하여 영웅소설의 확장을 시도하는 서로다른 방식을 보여주는 작품들이다. 이 두 작품에 나타난 기존의 장르 문법과 새로운 서사요소의 결합은 소설 유형의 변이와 장르 해체에 대한 중요한 시사점이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study examines Geumbangwooljeon and Kim Won Jeon in terms of the narrative variations of schematism in hero novels. It investigates the significance of the embodiment of two heroes, Geumryeong and Kim Won. Both follow the narrative structure of a hero’s overall story, but deviate from a schematic development by accepting the myths of egg birth and destroying a monster in an underground realm and rescuing an abducted woman. In Geumbangwooljeon and Kim Won Jeon, the protagonists undergo a “transformation from a non-human being to a human being” by changing their forms to overcome abandonment” and crisis in childhood. This shows that the novels accept the egg birth myth. The protagonists demonstrate their heroic nature with their extraordinary abilities, focusing on the extermination of a monster by accepting the myth of destroying a monster in an underground realm and rescuing an abducted woman. This is a different style from most hero novels that depict the hero as overcoming the crisis of a modern order, such as conspiracy and war.
Even though Geumryeong and Kim Won have been endowed with abilities by the Heaven, they cannot reveal their heroic aspects completely. Geumryeong is neglected by her parents and people around her for being born in a non-human form despite her transcendent abilities. After changing her form, she is not able to exert her transcendent abilities and is restricted by her family. Kim Won is a Taoist hermit with miraculous powers, born in a non-human form and isolated from his family and society. After changing his form and studying the Book of Heaven’s Revelations, he gains extraordinary abilities. He cannot, however, destroy a monster without the assistance of a helper. After escaping from the underground world, he gets helplessly killed by an ordinary being.
Both Geumbangwooljeon and Kim Won Jeon accepted a myth to deviate from the typical development of hero novels, in which they show hybridism between a hero to protect the system and a mythical figure. Geumbangwooljeon accepts mythical imagination to embody Geumryeong in a non-human form and a female hero that assists her husband as his wife. It is her husband Haeryong that plays the typical heroic role to protect the national order. This narrative compromise is a strategy to seek narrative variations while keeping the genre of hero novels.
Kim Won Jeon tries to deviate from the typical hero by accepting an exploration of hero in folklore. However, an exploration hero’s narrative of destroying a monster overlaps with the old hero narrative, which does not ensure a clear differentiation. Kim Won Jeon thus attempts to have a narrative variation by inserting a resurrection tale. However, the protagonist’s helpless death and resurrection by the intervention of a mythical being clashes with the genre of hero novels that revolve around a hero’s leading roles in task fulfillment. In Kim Won Jeon, a clash between different genres appear in the parallel enumeration of several narrative elements and the resolution of conflicts in which causal relations are uncertain.
Geumbangwooljeon and Kim Won Jeon show different methods of expanding a hero novel by accepting mythical imagination. The combination of an old genre and a new narrative element in these novels offers important implications for the variation of the novel types and the deconstruction of a genre.
