자서전의 시대, 접촉된 자서전: 1970년대 자서전의 존재에 대하여 (A Study on the Existence of Autobiographies in the 1970s)

초록

이 논문은 1970년대 자서전의 열풍을 ‘생산-소비’의 순환과 ‘미디어-출판’의 관계 속에서 파악하고 자서전의 개념과 감각이 사회적으로 형성되는 방식을 이해하고자 자서전이 정기간행물과 출판물에 나타난 방식을 살펴보았다. 그리고 자서전 집필·독서 주체의 특징을 정리해봄으로써 사회 내 개인의 존재 변화를 파악하고자 했다. 이 때 두 가지, 시대적 흐름에 따른 연속과 변모, 그리고 국내외 저술이 혼재된 현실을 단절적으로 보지 않기 위하여, 해방 후 한글 자서전이 나오기 시작한 1950년대부터 본격화된 1970년대까지를 함께 살펴보았고, 독자 입장에서는 동시에 체감되었던 번역된 해외 자서전과 국내 자서전을 아울러 대상으로 삼았다. 이를 통해 밝힌 바는, 1970년대 자서전이 미국의 영향을 받는 미디어와 저널리즘의 속성, 출판 시장의 생리 속에서 대량 양산되었으며, 자서전의 집필 주체가 될 만한 사회적 공인의 위상과 범위가 변화하고 있었다는 점이다. 자서전은 고전 독물로 존재하기도 했으나 사생활과 진실에 대한 대중 욕망을 충족시켜주는 대중적 소비물기도 했다. 이렇게 생산된 자서전에는 시대를 구성한 주체의 특성이 고스란히 담겨 있었다. 1970년대는 근현대사의 주요 곡절을 겪고 각 분야의 토대를 닦은 사회 원로 세대가 포진하게 되었고, 자본주의에 근간한 다양한 직업군들이 부상했으며, 여성의 자의식과 사회 진출이 강화되고 있었다. 자서전은 산업화와 근대화의 기틀을 다진 세대가 다음 세대에 그 노하우를 전수할 수 있을 정도로 사회가 완만한 성장 속도를 보이고, 현대사의 주요 곡절을 기억하는 세대가 사회 주역에서 퇴진하며, 새로운 문화 감각과 전망을 갖춘 세대가 부상하는 시대적 조건 속에서 융성할 수 있는 장르였다.

영어초록

This study examines the methods in which autobiographies appeared in periodical publications and books. The purpose of the study is to examine the popularity of autobiographies in the 1970s within the cycle of “production-consumption” and the relation of “media-publication” and to understand the method in which the concept of autobiography came to be socially formed. By organizing the characteristics of principal agents of autobiographies, this research also discerns the transformation of the existence of the individual. Therefore, the study examines autobiographies from the 1950s to the 1970s and translated autobiographies as well as Korean autobiographies. Such materials were selected to examine as follows: the continuation and transformation through time period, and the reality of domestic (Korean) and foreign writings combined. The findings of the study show that in the 1970s, autobiographies were produced in large volumes due to the US-influenced media, the trait of journalism, and the nature of the publishing industry. Furthermore, the decade brought changes to the scope of social public figure to write an autobiography. While autobiographies existed as classic reading materials, they also were goods for popular consumption that satisfied the needs of the public to recognize the private lives and truths. The 1970s had the elder generation in society who laid the foundation in each field of the society who overcame all of the major vicissitudes of the modern and contemporary history of Korea; it was also marked by the rise of various occupations from the capitalism; the decade also saw the strengthening of women’s self-consciousness and advances to society. Consequently, the 1970s created a condition in which the society showed a gradual speed of development that allowed the elder generation that originated the industrialization and modernization to pass down their knowledge to the next generation. The elder generations were retiring from the leading role in society, and in which a new generation of youth were rising with new cultural senses and vision. Under such conditions created by the era, the genre of autobiography was able to flourish.
