도시 이주와 정착, 여성 노동자의 정체성 구성 연구 －광주 지역 방직공장 여성 노동자를 대상으로－ (A Study on Urban Migration and Settlement, and the Identity Structure of Female Workers －Focusing on Female Workers in Textile Factories in Gwangju Area－)

초록

본 연구는 1950~60년대 광주 방직공장 여성노동자들의 구술생애담을 대상으로 정체성을 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 일본 면산업은 1920년대부터 광주에 진출했다. 일제는 근대적 면산업을 통해서 여성들을 낮은 임금으로 고용하여 착취했고, 도시 주변부 공간에 거주한 빈민 조선인들을 통제했다. 이러한 일제의 착취는 해방과 함께 사라진다. 일제가 건설한 방직공장은 해방 이후 광주 지역의 중요한 산업 시설이 된다. 한국전쟁 이후 농촌의 많은 미혼 여성들이 돈을 벌기 위해서 광주로 온다. 방직공장 여성들은 돈을 벌어서 가족을 부양하고, 자기 스스로 결혼을 준비한다는 자부심과 희망이 있었다. 하지만 방직공장 여성들은 다양한 물리적 억압과 폭력 속에 놓여 있었고, 그들의 정체성을 비윤리성으로 포획하는 모습을 경험한다. 방직공장 여성들은 정상적 여성상과 비정상적 여성상을 범주화하는 타자적 시선 속에 갇혀 버린다. 많은 여성들이 방직공장 노동에 대해서 침묵과 망각, 굴절로써 반응했다. 하지만 자기 서사는 ‘자기 긍정’에 대한 지향을 포기하지 않는다. 방직공장 여성들은 자신들이 노동을 하게 된 본원적 목적과 그 목적의 달성이 현재의 시점에서 어떤 의미를 지니고 있는지를 인정의 서사로 구성함으로써 타자적 시선에서 포획된 정체성이 아닌 자신의 정체성을 해명하는 모습을 보였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the identity of female workers with their oral life stories in textile factories in Gwangju in the 1950s and 1960s. The Japanese industrial capital came to Gwangju centered on the silk reeling industry in the 1920s and the textile industry in the 1930s. Mud hut people in the periphery of Gwangju and young women who migrated from rural areas worked in silk reeling factories and textile factories. The Japanese Imperial, through the modern cotton industry, hired and exploited women at low wages, and they controlled the poor Joseon people who lived in the urban perimeter space. This exploitation of Japanese Imperial disappears with the liberation. Textile factories built by the Japanese Imperial are an important industrial facility in Gwangju area after the liberation. The textile industry was the sector that created employment by playing a role as the basic industry of the region. After the Korean War, many unmarried women in rural areas came to Gwangju to make money. Women working at textile factories earned money to support their families, had self‐esteem and hoped that they prepared themselves for marriage. But textile factory women were exposed to various physical repression and violence, and they experienced the appearance of capturing their identity unethically. Textile factory women were trapped in the other’s eyes categorizing normal women and abnormal women. Many women responded to silence, forgetting, and refraction in the textile factory work. However, their narrative did not give up the intention of ‘self affirmation’. Textile factory women constituted the narrative of recognition about what meanings the main purpose of their working at the textile factory, and the achievement of the purpose had at the present time, and showed the appearance of elaborating their own identity, not the identity captured in the other’s eyes.
