프랑스 선교사 빌렘의 한국인 민족운동 인식 (French Catholic missionary, Wilhelm’s perception of the Korean national movements)

초록

빌렘은 1889년부터 1914년까지 한국 천주교회에서 활동한 파리외방전교회 선교사였다. 그는 한국사회에 부패와 억압이 뿌리 깊게 자리 잡고 있다고 보았다. 빌렘은 한국의 진로를 결정할 러일전쟁이 발발하였는데도 한국인들이 국가의 위기를 걱정하지 않는다고 했다. 전쟁과 사회 혼란에 대처하지 못하는 한국 정부의 무능함도 비판하였다. 이러한 인식을 가진 빌렘에게 일제의 한국 지배는 당연한 결과였다. 한국의 장래가 이미 결정되었다고 본 빌렘은 한국인의 민족운동에 부정적이었다.
빌렘의 한국인 민족운동 인식을 잘 보여주는 사건은 안중근 의거였다. 안중근은 빌렘이 사목하는 청계동본당 신자였다. 여순감옥에 수감된 안중근은 빌렘에게 성사를 요청하였다. 빌렘은 안중근 의거가 “정당화될 수 없는 범죄”임을 분명히 했다. 안중근 면회를 이유로 조선대목구장 뮈텔이 성무 집행 정지 처분을 내리자, 빌렘은 안중근을 면회하는 것이 정치적인 문제와 관련 없으며 안중근에게 종교적 위안을 주기 위해서라고 했다. 이와 같은 빌렘의 입장에는 안중근 의거에 대한 이해나 옹호는 보이지 않는다.
빌렘은 경술국치 이후에 한국이 “일본화”되면서 “거의 문명화된 나라”가 되었다고 했다. 일제와 대립하지 않고 신중함을 유지해야 한다고 했고, 민족운동이 선교에 좋지 않은 영향을 미친다고 보았다. 그는 1911년에 독립운동에 투신한 청계동본당 신자 안명근을 일제 당국에 고발하기도 했다. 그런데 빌렘은 1913년에 돌연 안명근의 사면을 총독부에 요청했다. 하지만 이는 안명근의 독립운동을 이해해서가 아니라 안명근이 “참회”했다고 여겼기 때문이다. 이처럼 빌렘의 한국인 민족운동에 대한 인식은 안중근 의거 이전이나 이후나 거의 변함이 없었고, 동료 선교사들의 인식과도 큰 차이가 없었다.

영어초록

Wilhelm was a missionary, a member of the Paris Foreign Missions(les Missions Étrangères de Paris), and he worked for the Catholic church in Korea from 1889 to 1914. He thought that the corruption and the oppression had been deeply rooted in Korean society. Wilhelm said that Koreans did not worry about national crisis though the Russo-Japanese War which might decide the Korea’s future had broken out. He also criticized the inability of the Korean government to deal with the war and the social disorder. For Wilhelm who had this perception, the Japanese domination of Korea was an obvious result. He thought the future of Korea had already been decided, therefore he was cynical about the Korean national movement.
In Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic deed, Wilhelm’s perception of the Korean national movement was clearly shown. Ahn Jung-geun was a member of the Cheonggyedong Catholic church where Wilhelm did his pastoral work. Ahn Jung-geun imprisoned in Lushun Prison asked Wilhelm to give sacraments. Wilhelm clarified that Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic deed was an “unjustifiable crime”. Mutel, vicar apostolic of Joseon had determined the punishment, the interdíctum for Wilhelm visiting Ahn Jung-geun in prison, thereupon Wilhelm asserted that his visit had not been involved in political issues and the visit had taken place for only bringing Ahn the solace of religion. Neither understanding nor defence of Ahn Jung-geun is found in Wilhelm’s position.
Wilhelm remarked that after the Japanese annexation of Korea in 1910, Korea undergoing “Japanization” had become an “almost civilized country”. He said it was needed to be prudent without coming into conflict with Japan, and he thought the national movement had negative influence on missionary works. He even denounced Ahn Myeong-geun, a member of the Cheonggyedong Catholic church, who had joined in the independence movement in 1911, to the Japanese colonial government. Unexpectedly, in 1913, Wilhelm asked Japanese Government General of Korea a pardon for Ahn Myeong-geun. However it was not because Wilhelm understood Ahn Myeong-geun’s independence movement, but because he felt that Ahn had “repented”. Thus, Wilhelm’s perception of the Korean national movement remained much the same before and after the Ahn Jung-geun’s patriotic deed, and there were no significant differences with his fellow missionaries.
