Emergence of Natural Gardens and Differentiation of Garden Styles

초록

Born in the early twentieth century in England, natural gardens are differentiated into different styles of gardens in different countries’ environments and cultural contexts. Natural gardens emerged and developed amid these timely circumstances. In England, Robinson and Jekyll established naturalism, took the initiative in natural planting and created wild gardens. Hence the emergence of natural gardens was followed by the development of natural themes by using under-planting of forests, hardy plants, and exotic plants in forest and water edges which introduced low-maintenance systems. This influenced Foerster in Germany, where sunken gardens were adapted to the country’s climate and were powered by political situations that encouraged the development of genetic understandings and variations and natural gardens in wild meadow styles emerged. Propelled by geographic characteristics and Thijsse’s contributions, the Netherlands developed the concept of Germany’s biosphere, by which habitat and plant community-oriented natural gardens emerged. In the United States, Jensen developed natural gardens that focused on meadows and organized diverse species and sequences. Through the course of evolution, natural gardens were differentiated from gardens to urban parks and open spaces, and afterwards from compromised gardens to informal, prairie styles. Lastly they were coupled with new materials of grass and new thoughts of seasons, hence the creation of winter gardens. They were a pioneer of eco-parks and established foundations for environmental education.
