This study deals with the representative shamanistic ritual music, Ssikkim-gut of Chindo Island. Ssikkim-gut is the washing ritual of the dead in Cholla province, where the music is very central and highly complicated. The tradition of the ritual performance by hereditary shamans (tanggol) has been fairly well in Chindo (South-eastern Island). The ritual consists of the washing ceremony as its climax before which main shamanistic gods are individually serviced.
Myungin-gut, the washing ceremony of the dead, is a symbolic drama of the passage to the other world. Tanggol precises the ceremony in the order of, 1) calling the soul of the dead (nŏk-p'uri), 2) washing his/her impureness (isŭl t'ŏlgi), 3) separating the dead from the living by detaching the paper-soul (nŏk-olligi), 4) untying the knots (ko-p'uri), 5) preparing the dead to face the other world (yukgap-p'uri, ch'ŏn'gŭn-puri), the finally 6) accompanying the road to the other world (kil-ttakkŭm). The performance of the ceremony is full of symbols and magics. Utilizing many symbolic instruments of cleansing, releasing, severing, curing, tanggol performs songs and dances of magical meanings.
Recently Ssikkim-gut has changed a great deal. Not only the tradition’s carrier and its context, but also its status and meaning had changed drastically. Around 2000, the frequency of its performance in the island became seriously declined and the identity of the ritual as a cultural treasure became known to general public. The original function that it taught the living the death has gone, and instead the new functions such as a performing art piece or a social event representing resistance and issues of conflict-mediator are beginning to operate.
