초록

근대소설에서 서술자의 시점은 서술에 질서를 부여해 플롯을 정당화하는 근거로작동되고 있다. 이 논문은 일인칭 시점 소설에서 특히 주인물의 특별한 경험을 그 주변인인 ‘나’가 독자에게 의미 있게 각인될 수 있게 서술함으로써 일정한 효과를 거둔소설을 주목한다. 이는 시점 연구에서 분석 단계를 넘어 창작적으로 유효한 방법론을얻으려는 시도다. 황순원의 「모든 영광은」과 이청준의 「벌레 이야기」는 일인칭 관찰자 시점을 전략적으로 채택해 문학적 성취를 이룬 예로 창작적 방법론이라는 측면에서도 좋은 길잡이가 된다.
「모든 영광은」은 전란 중에 피해자이자 가해자가 된 한 사내가 자신이 처한 극심한모순을 사랑의 힘으로 극복해 가는 과정을 ‘나’가 관찰자로서 수렴하고 있다. 소설 전반부에서 ‘나’는 사내의 접근을 불쾌하게 여기며 거부감을 드러낸다. 그러나 점차 사내의 얘기에 빠져들면서 끝내 사내가 취할 행동에 대해 지지하게 된다. 여기서 ‘거부감’에서 ‘연대감’으로 전이되는 ‘나’의 심리적 전이과정은 곧 일인칭 관찰자로 채택된‘나’의 ‘체험적 지연’에 의해 기대효과를 발휘함으로써 독자의 공감을 유도한다.
「벌레 이야기」은 자식이 유괴되고 결국 살해된 시체로 발견된 것에 대한 아내의 행동 변화를 ‘나’를 통해 수렴하고 있다. 그 내용은 자식의 비극적인 죽음에 대한 어머니의 정신파탄이 어떤 것인가를 보여주는 데 그치지 않는다. ‘나’는 아내의 행동이 의미하는 바를 제대로 전하기 위해 ‘서술자아’로서 여러 차례 사건 자체를 되짚어 설명하는 과정을 드러낸다. 이러한 ‘되짚어 설명하기’는 아내의 행동이 통상적인 용서와 화해가 은폐시키는 진정한 의미를 제대로 부각하려는 ‘나’의 ‘서술적 지연’에 해당한다.
이는 독자에게 이 사건에 대한 정당한 평가를 넘어 진정한 가치평가를 유도하는 데기여한다.
일인칭 관찰자 시점은 창작적 관점에서 복잡한 상황, 중층적인 이해를 필요로 하는 사건, 미세한 내면 심리를 지닌 인물 등을 효과적으로 드러내는 방법론으로 설명된다. 「모든 영광은」과 「벌레 이야기」는 이를 성공적으로 적용한 작품으로 특히 ‘나’ 의 주인물에 대한 태도를 각각 체험과 서술이라는 면에서 ‘지연’이라는 방법론을 적용해 성취를 얻었다. 이는 시점 선택의 창작효과를 밝히는 좋은 예로 이해된다. 이 글은 「모든 영광은」과 「벌레 이야기」 두 편에 관한 연이은 논문 중 제1편에 해당하는 소논문이다. 이어지는 논문은 「벌레 이야기」에 관한 것으로 다음 지면에 발표할 예정이다.

In novels, the narrator’s point of view functions as a basisto justify the plot and give order to the narrative.The present thesis focuses on novels that achieve certain effectsthrough first-person narration, describing the main character’s experiences in such a way that the ‘I’, who is witnessing the event, can be meaningfully imprint ed on the reader. It attemptsto derive a creatively valid methodology beyond the analysisstage of ‘point-of-view research’. Hwang Sun-weon’s “All Glory” andYi Cheongchun’s “The Story of theWorm” are as examples of literary achievement that in terms of creative methodology are also good guides for writers in their strategic adoption of a first-person perspective.
“All Glory” describes one man’s process of becoming both victim and perpetra tor during the war, then his experience as an observer facing and overcoming the extreme contradiction through the power of love. In the first half of the novel, ‘I’ is put off by a man’s approach but gradually, as he becomes absorbed in the man’s story, eventually becomessupportive of what the man’sfuture course of action.
Here, the psychological transition process of ‘I’from ‘rejection’to ‘solidarity’is rooted in the ‘experiential delay’ he adopts as a first-person observer.
“The Story of the Worm” similarly describes through the ‘I’ perspective of the husband the changesin his wife’s behavior after her child is kidnapped and eventually found murdered.The narrative does notstop atshowinga mother’s mental breakdown over the tragic death of her child through ‘I’’s perspective. ‘I’’s reflective process of revisiting and re-explaining the event several times as ‘narrator’ in order to properly convey the meaning of his wife’s actions, correspondsto a ‘descriptive delay’ as he tries to highlight the true meaning hidden in his ordinary reconciliation with and forgiveness of the wife’s actions.
The first-person observer’s point of view is described from the point of view of creative writing, as an effective methodology for revealing complex situations, portraying events that require multiple layers of understanding, and describing people with subtle inner psychologies. “All Glory” and “The Story of the Worm” are works that successfully apply this technique, using ‘delay’ as a methodology for portraying the attitude of the ‘I’ towards the main character both in terms of ex perience and description. The works are understood as good examples showing the creative effect of viewpoint selection. This paper is the first of a series of papers on “All Glory” and “The Story of the Worm”.
