柳僖 詩經論에 반영된 해석과 접근의 재구조화 (Restructuring of the Interpretation and the Approaches to the Book of Songs Shown in Seo-pa(西陂) Yu-hui(柳僖)'s Discussion)

초록

본고는 서파 유희의 시경론을 18세기 후반∼19세기 초반 조선시대 『시경』 해석 및 접근에서 재구조화 양상의 한 사례로 고찰하는 데 중심 목적이 있다.
유희의 시경론 관련 문헌은 현재 『문통』에 포함된 『讀詩三百』, 『詩詁』, 『詩物名考』 3종이 확인되는데, 본고는 이를 註解텍스트의 유별화를 통한 『시경』 해석과 접근의 재구조화라는 측면에서 고찰했다. 『독시삼백』에서는 『시경』의 성격 및 『시경』 독법에 대해 논의했고 『시고』에서는 『시경』 구절을 훈고의 각도에서 고찰했으며 『시물명고』에서는 『시경』 물명이 지닌 역사적 多岐性을 인식한 기반 위에 『물명언해』를 비판적으로 계승하면서 물명의 실제와 우리말 어휘로의 전환 문제를 중점적으로 논의했다. 3종 문헌은 『시경』 관련 논의를 하나의 텍스트로 통합하여 처리하는 방식이 아닌, 주해의 성격에 따라 저술을 유별화한 특징을 지닌다. 이는 유희가 저술 체재 면에서 『시경』 해석과 접근을 재구조화, 유형화하는 방식을 통해 해당 분야에 대한 전문성뿐만 아니라 『시경』 해석과 접근의 다양성을 보여준 부분으로 파악할 수 있다.
유희의 시경론에는 언어의 한계를 넘어 감흥을 중시하는 『시경』 독법과 『시경』에 대한 언어적 접근과 명물도수학을 비롯한 고증적 접근에 초점을 둔 『시경』 독법이 공존한다. 이렇듯 일견 상충되어 보이는 독법의 공존은 유희 『시경』 독법의 특징으로 파악할 수 있다. 유희의 이러한 독법에는 『시경』 언어[言]에 대한 의미 고구의 한계를 논증하고 극복하려는 과정과 언어[言]의 한계를 넘어 경전의 담긴 의도[意]에 다가가려는 과정이 공존함으로써 『시』의 언어[言]적 특징과 한계를 언어적ㆍ경전해석적으로 접근하는 면모가 반영되어 있다.
유희의 『시경』 해석과 접근은 조선후기 경학에 대한 고증학적 접근이 심화되는 시기에 고증학적 접근을 적극적으로 심화함과 동시에 감성과 감흥을 중시하는 접근이 공존하는 공간을 마련하였다는 점에서 조선후기 『시경』의 다양한 독법 가운데 또 하나의 개성을 보여준다 하겠다.

영어초록

The main purpose of this paper is to consider the Seopa Yuhui(西陂 柳僖)’s discussion on the Book of Songs as one example of the restructuring aspect in the interpretation and approach of the Book of Songs in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
There are three documents related to Yu-hui’s discussion of the Book of Songs, which are currently included in the Mun-tong(文通). They are considered in terms of interpretation and restructuring of approaches to the Book of Songs. In Reading of Three Hundred Poems of the Book of Songs(讀詩三百), he discussed the nature of the Book of Songs and the reading method. In the exegesis on the Book of Songs(詩詁), he analyzed some phrases according to the way of classical commentary. In Thesaurus of Names of Things in the Book of Songs(詩物名考), while critically inheriting his Vernacular Translation of Thesaurus of Names of Things(物名諺解), he focused on the issues of the actuality of name of things and the transition to Korean vocabulary with considering historical discrepancies. Those three documents have the characteristic of distinguishing the writings according to the natures of the exegesis, rather than of using the method of integrating and processing the discussions related to the Book of Songs into a single text. This can be understood as the part where Yu-hui showed the diversity of interpreting and approaching the Book of Songs, as well as expertise in the field, through the way of restructuring and typifying the interpretation and approach of the Book of Songs in the aspect of writing style.
In the Yu-hui’s discussion of the Book of Songs, two different reading methods co-exist: the one is the reading method of emphasizing ethical inspiration beyond the limits of language, and the other one is the reading method of focusing on textual critic-approach including linguistics and mathematics. Although this may seem contradictory at first glance, it can be grasped as a characteristic of Yu-hui’s reading method of the Book of Songs.
Yu-hui’s interpretation and approach to the Book of Songs is unique in that it provides a space where an emotional approach co-exists with the philological approach which was actively deepening in the late Joseon Dynasty.
