104위 형식 신중도 고찰-日燮 作 表忠寺 大光殿 신중도를 중심으로 (A Study of the Painting of the 104 Buddhist Guardian Deities – with the Focus on the Painting of the Guardian Deities in the Main Hall of Pyochungsa Temple by Ilseop)

초록

이 논문은 104위 형식 신중도와 그 가운데 가장 작품성이 뛰어난 표충사 대광전 <신중도>를 종합적으로 고찰한 연구이다.
104位 신중은 조선 후기 의식집을 통해 정비된 한국 고유의 신중 체계이다. 의식집에 의하면 104위 신중은 金剛部, 天部, 擁護部 등 3단으로 구성되어 있다. 그러나 신중 의례의 대상으로 佛殿에 봉안되는 신중도는 표충사본 이전까지 104위 신중을 모두 표현한 작품이 4작품에 불과했다. 즉 104위 형식의 신중도는 구현해야 하는 도상이 많아 제작의 어려움이 크기 때문에 신중도를 제작할 때 선호하지 않은 형식이었다고 볼 수 있다. 그리고 표충사본 이전에 제작된 4작품의 104위 형식 신중도는 시기가 내려갈수록 의식집에서 설명하고 있는 104위 신중의 구성체계에서 벗어나고 불분명한 將帥形 도상으로 신중의 숫자만 채우려는 의지가 강했다. 그런데 일섭의 표충사본은 이와 같은 흐름을 역행하여 신중 의례의 구성 체계에 부합하게 화면을 구성하였고, 다양한 도상을 차용 혹은 창출하여 한국의 신중도 가운데 104위 신중신앙을 가장 충실하게 표현한 작품으로 제작되었다. 특히 한국의 신중도에서 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 없는 중국 예적금강 도상을 차용하여 화면 중앙에 부각시켰는데 이와 같은 이국적인 예적금강 도상은 예배자로 하여금 자연스럽게 104위 신중의 주존인 예적금강상으로 시선을 집중하게 만들었다. 또한 옹호부의 主稼神, 草卉神, 主城神, 主火神, 主風神 등의 도상들을 창출하였는데 의식집에서 설명하고 있는 각 신들의 성격을 시각화하여 예배자로 하여금 직관적으로 그 신의 성격을 알아볼 수 있게 하였다.

영어초록

This paper concerns a research study that was carried out on the Painting of the 104 Buddhist Guardian Deities, with a particular emphasis on the most outstanding of them all, the painting of the guardian deities kept in the main hall of Pyochungsa Temple.
The 104 Buddhist guardian deities are the deities that became widely established in Korea in the latter part of the Joseon period following the publication of a book on Buddhist ceremonies. According to this book, the 104 Buddhist guardian deities are divided into the 3 hierarchical groups of Geumgangbu, Cheonbu and Onghobu. However, prior to the production of the Painting of the Guardian Deities in the Main Hall of Pyochungsa Temple, paintings of the 104 Buddhist guardian deities kept inside Buddhist buildings as objects of worship rarely featured all 104 deities; in fact, only four such paintings contained all 104 deities. In other words, when creating paintings of the guardian deities, artists tended to avoid painting all 104 of them because the prodigious number of deities naturally led to production difficulties. Furthermore, the four deity paintings that did include all 104 Buddhist deities (i.e. the ones that preceded the Painting of the Guardian Deities in the Main Hall of Pyochungsa Temple) did not adhere to the proper hierarchical system of the 104 Guardian Deities presented in the book on Buddhist ceremonies. This tendency to disregard the proper ordering of the deities becomes more pronounced in paintings that came later on, as many artists were inclined to simply fill up the paintings with indistinguishable warrior-like figures in order to represent the deities. However, Ilseop’s painting of the deities kept at Pyochungsa Temple went against the grain as he faithfully recreated the proper hierarchical order of the 104 guardian deities, and created either different-looking variations of the same deity or completely different looking deities. As such, his painting is the most accurate portrayal of the hierarchy. In particular, he included a Chinese Ucchusma icon in the center of his painting, a feature never before included in a Korean Buddhist deity painting, thus attracting the attention of the viewer to the king of the 104 guardian deities. Also, in creating onghobu icons like chugasin, chohwesin, chuseongsin, chuhwasin, and chupoongsin, Ilseop managed to visualize the characteristics of each icon as described in the book on Buddhist ceremonies, thereby making it possible for worshippers to intuitively recognize the nature of the deity they were gazing at.
