초록

12월 12일 은 이상의 유일한 장편 소설이자 소설로서 계보상 가장 처음에 쓰인 처녀작이다. 때문에 이상의 자전적 성격이 짙게 배여 있는 작품이라고 할 수있다. 그러나 그동안 이상의 첫 소설인 12월 12일 에 대한 단독 연구는 미진한편이었다. 발굴 이후 이상 문학 전체를 아우르는 특성을 담아내고 있다고 주목 받으면서도, 12월 12일 의 해석은 전기적 요소로 기울어졌기 때문이다. 12월 12일 을 이상의 각혈 체험이나 양자 체험과 결부해 이상이 당시 느꼈을 법한 죽음에대한 공포와 불안, 생에 대한 허무 의식의 흔적들을 이상문학의 정신적 기원으로해석한 것이 지배적인 것이다. 가족사적 체험에서 이상이 느낀 억압이나 충격을12월 12일 의 서사적 전개와 연결시키는 해석도 꾸준하지만 소설 자체에 대한평가는 부정적이다. 서사 전개에서 드러나는 취약성이나 형식적 미숙함, 등장인물의 입체감 부족, 주관적 관념에 함몰되어 있는 점 등이 장편소설에 미달하는 단점으로 지적받는다. 12월 12일 이 이상 문학세계의 해명을 위한 부수적 텍스트로활용되거나, 첫 소설의 의의로서 강조되는 것도 이 때문이다. 그러나 12월 12일을 기존의 논의에만 가두어두는 것은 분명 아쉬움이 남는다. 12월 12일 이 장편소설에 미달한다는 것은 일반적인 소설의 기준에 비추었을 때 유효한 평가이다.
일반적인 소설의 기준을 만족하는 것은 일반적인 소설이다. 이상이 소설적 규범을염두에 두고 쓰지 않았다면 독해 역시 그것과 결별해야 한다. 이상은 이 시기에모던과 사실주의 창작 방식 사이에서 방황했을 것으로 여겨진다. 모더니즘 소설이란 자아와 세계의 간극을 보여주는 서사의 해체 속에서 불편함을 감수해야만 한다. 소설이라는 통상적인 형식에 따라 사실주의 방식으로 그려낸다면 이상 문학이라는 서사는 발생하지 않았을 것이다. 그래서 12월 12일 을 이상의 처녀작으로써 뿐만 아니라 앞으로 등장하게 될 단편 소설의 형식 파괴와 기법실험의 징후적작품으로 보아야 할 것이다. 그래서 시점의 혼종에서 오는 한계와 빈번한 작가의논평이나 캐릭터 설정 등도 단순히 작가의 미숙성으로 폄하되던 기존의 연구 방법에서 벗어나 작품의 서사생성 원리로 초점을 맞춰야 하는 것이다. 이것은 모더니즘 소설과 사실주의 소설 양극단의 기로에 선 작가의 갈등 흔적을 좀 더 깊게 천착하는 작업이다. 이는 이상이 12월 12일 을 시작으로 불행한 창작가로서 소설쓰기라는 작업을 고뇌하기 시작했다는 의미이며, 또 하나의 ‘사건’을 예고하기 때문이기도 하다. 이에 본고에서는 작품 자체에 초점을 맞추어 12월 12일 의 서사생성 원리와 작동 방식에 대해 고찰하고자 한다. 이로써 그러한 요소들이 소설의 주제인 ‘운명’과 어떻게 결합하는지 규명하고, 더불어 이상 문학에서 12월 12일 이놓이는 지정학적 위치를 되돌아 볼 것이다.

영어초록

December 12th is Lee Sang's only full-length novel and his first work in genealogy of his literary accomplishment. So it can be considered to reflect the writer's autobiographical memory. However, single research studies on this novel has not been entirely satisfactory. Even though Lee's first novel has been appreciated for ranging over general characteristics of the writer's literary world, interpretation on December 12th tends to focus on writer's biographical factors reflected on the novel. The predominant view on December 12th is seeing it as genesis of Lee's literary world full of fear and anxiety over the matter of death and existential nihilistic consciousness, relating the novel to Lee's contemporary experience of hemoptysis and the memory of his childhood as an adopted son. Attempts to connect suppression and shock that Lee may have felt through his history of family to its narrative structure have been observed constantly but the estimation for the novel itself is negative.
Weakness of epic, formal immaturity, lack of solidity of characters, and withdrawal into the subjective idea are pointed out as the shortcomings of this work to be a proper f ull-length novel. These flaws a re t he r easons that December 12th is applied as subordinate text to figure out Lee's literary characteristics and only recognized as a maiden work. However, confining the meaning of December 12th to the existing discourse leaves sense of inconvenience. Criticism about December 12th on that account that it falls short of the full-length novel's standards is only valid when it is estimated according to general literary criteria. Ordinary novels meet the requirement of ordinary literary standard. If Lee wrote the novel without considering the standard, the reading should be apart from the familiar standard. Lee is reckoned to have been wandering between the tradition of realistic writing and shift to modern writing style. Modernism novels put up with the inconvenience created by the dissolution of narrative exhibiting the gap between the self and the external world.
If his narrative style had followed the accepted format of novel, Lee's literary achievement that is seen nowadays would have not existed.
So December 12th should be appreciated as a sign that portends destruction of formal structure and experiments occurred in Lee's short stories. So the limitation caused by the hybridism among perspectives, frequent intervention of writers, and flat characters which have been simply derogated as the writer's immaturity need to b e reconsidered a s principles f or c reating new narrative. Such a shift of v iew point will deepen the understanding of conflict that the writer had gone through who was on the crossroads of both extremes; realism and modernism. It also implies that Lee started his agony about writing itself since the novel, and it was an announcement of forthcoming 'incident.' This article will focus on the novel itself and contemplate on generative principles of narrative of December 12th and the way it works. So how such elements is connected to its theme, 'destiny,' and the novel's geopolitical position in Lee Sang's literary world will be observed.
