초록

平壤磁器株式會社는 1908년 평양시에 설립된 한국 최초의 근대식산업자기 생산 공장이었다. 이 회사는 평양에 거주하던 유지자본가를비롯하여 독립단체들의 결집으로 설립되어 대한제국 건국 당시 사양길로 접어들기 시작한 도자제작 전반에 새로운 패러다임을 제시해 줄수 있는 기틀을 마련하였다. 대한제국 말기에 설립된 이 회사의 설립취지는 1884년 조선조 관요인 分院이 민영으로 전환되자 고급백자생산에 차질이 발생하고 朝日修好條約을 통해 막대한 양의 왜사기가수입되자 요업 전반의 근대화 추진은 물론이고 생산체제의 변화를 추구하기 위해서였다.
특히 대한제국을 맞이하면서 공예부흥이 곧 식산흥업의 주된 맥락으로 부상하자 도자제작에서도 특별한 대안들이 제시되었고 이후 말기에 이르러 근대적 시스템을 어느 정도 구비한 평양자기회사가 설립될 수 있었다. 한국 근대기에 설립된 이 회사를 주목하게 되는 것은비단 한국 역사상 산업자기를 체계적인 방식으로 생산하던 공장이었다는 점 이상의 의미를 가지고 있다. 이 회사는 분원 해체 이후 한국요업에 새로운 방향을 제시해 줄 수 있다는 확신 아래 설립이 계획되었고 더불어 회사 설립을 통해 전문 인력들을 배출하고 교육기관과의교류활동을 겸할 수 있다는 취지가 반영되어 있었다.
비록 평양자기회사는 조선인에 의해 운영된 기간이 10여 년 정도에 불과하고 이 동안에도 일제의 개입으로 자율적으로 운영되지는 못했다. 그러나 조선 말기 요업실태를 회생하고 이러한 노력이 궁극적으로는 富國之術을 지향할 수 있다고 예견했던 각계각층의 노력은설립 초기부터 발현되었으며 이후 강점시기에는 일제의 보조금을 바탕으로 회사 운영에 만전을 기했다. 이에 따라 「朝鮮會社令」과 민족자본 동결 등으로 상공업계가 전반적으로 침체되어 있던 1910년대에도 이 회사는 산업자기를 계속해서 생산할 수 있었다.
대한제국기에 설립된 도자기회사 가운데 유일하게 비교적 많은 사료를 남긴 평양자기회사는 한국 도자사의 흐름에 근대성을 부여할 수있는 최초의 제작소였으며 이 회사의 제품과 기술력은 전국의 가마터로 일부분 확산되어 당시의 도자산업에 상당한 영향을 미쳤을 것으로보인다. 따라서 이 회사는 한국 근대기 최초의 근대식 공장으로 설립되어 새로운 서구기술을 전파하고 산업자기들을 본격 생산했던 선발주자로서의 진면목을 보여주는 表象이라고 볼 수 있다.

Pyeongyang ceramics stock company is Korea's first modernized industrial ceramics factory that was established in the city of Pyeongyang in 1908. The company founded by some local influential financiers and activist groups who worked for national independence paved the way for a paradigm shift in all aspects of the ceramics production that began to fall into a decline at the time of the Korean Empire period.
This company was established at the end of Korean Empire period in order to modernize all aspects of Korea's ceramics industry and improve the ceramics production system because the production of high–class white porcelain had suffered setback due to the Bunwon's privatization of 1884 that had been managed by government in the Joseon dynasty period and large quantities of Waesagi (Japanese porcelain products) had been imported as a result of amity treaty between Joseon and Japan.
From the beginning of the Korean Empire period, the revival of national crafts art was regarded as the same as the prosperity of national industry, and various ideas for ceramics production were proposed. However, it was only the end of the Korean Empire period that Pyeongyang ceramics stock company with a certain amount of modern system could be established.
This company established in Korean modern period, produced industrial ceramics in a systematic way for the first time in Korean history. But there's further meaning in the establishment of this company. The founders of the company, when they started this company, had a conviction that this company could show Korean ceramics industry a new direction and produce experts, and have links with educational institutions.
This company was managed by Koreans for only about 10 years.
But, even in this period, Japan intervened in the management of the company. However, the efforts of the people from various fields who expected that their endeavor to revitalize national crafts industry of the end of the Joseon period could promote national prosperity bore fruit from the beginning of the establishment of the company. And in the period of Japanese occupation, they run the company prudently with the assistance of Japanese subsidies. As a result, even in 1910 when Korea's commerce and industry were generally in recession because of the Company Ordinance and the freeze on the national capital, this company could continue to produce industrial ceramic products.
Among the companies that was established in the period of Korean Empire, Pyeongyang ceramics stock company was the only company that left relatively many historical materials. From the view point of Korean history of ceramics, this company was the first factory that showed the characteristics of modernity. And it seems that this company's products and new technical skills partly spread to many kilns all over the country and affected considerably Korea's ceramics culture in those days. So this company can be estimated to be the first modernized factory established in the modern period of Korea and a leading company that introduced new technology of the West to Korea and began to produce industrial ceramics in earnest.
