Yuyeonjeon is a record written by Baeksa Lee Hang‐bok in 1607 by the request of Ori Lee Won‐ik on the death in prison of Yuyeon who was unjustly accused of the murder of his brother. The record on Yuyeon’s death in prison began after 8 years from the disappearance of brother Yuyu. Yuyeon was exonerated from the charge after 15 years from the execution, and Yuyeonjeon was completed by Lee Hang‐bok after going through Lee Won‐ik’s hands after 28 years. Because Yuyeonjeon covers a long period from death in prison to the process of exoneration, its contents are also not simple.
Dealing with a case with such a complicated background, Yuyeonjeon triggered the subsequent production of various records related to Yuyeon’s death in prison, and these records show transitions around the Jeon style in the 16th～17th centuries. Records influenced by Yuyeonjeon are divided largely into two types. One is materials recorded in written documents. They sympathize with the purpose of Yuyeonjeon, and demand a more objective judgment on murder-related death in prison. The other is Kwon Deuk-gi’s Isaengsongwonrok written by the request of a son of Dalseongryeong Lee Ji who was executed after the 2nd trial on the appearance of Yuyu who had been considered to be murdered. It is focused on refuting contradictions in Yuyeonjeon.
Yuyeon’s death in prison clearly shows the influence of literary style in those days in that it formed a collection of records on the same case. In addition, readersitcontradictory responses supporting and criticizing Yuyeonjeon show that there was a certain change in the perception of Jeon style of Geosajikpry (據事直筆). Thus, it is necessary to perceive Yuyeonjeon not from the aspe thof the peculiar style Yuyeon’s case but from the aspe thof literary change based on the collective production of records on the massacres of Confucian scholars, wars, etc. and critical consciousness in the previous ages.
