예술의 뿌리로서의 공공성(公共性) - 존 듀이 예술론의 새로운 해석 - (Art Embedded in Publicness - Reconstruction of John Dewey's Theory of Art -)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 1920년대부터 30년대에 걸쳐 존 듀이가 사색 한 예술과 교육의 문제를 이 시기의 정치적 사회적 연관 가운데에서 해석하고, 미적경험이라고 하는 관점으로부터 ‘공공적인 것’을 구축하려고 시도한 듀이의 탐구의 독자성을 밝히는 일이다. 이를 위해 우선 당시 예술론의 전개 가운데에서 듀이의 위치를 정위하고, 다음으로 경험을 기초로 한 그의 예술론의 특징을 고찰하며, 나아가 그것이 공공성의 개념 형성에 미친 의미를 실천적인 관점으로부터 검토한다.
듀이는 권리와 자유의 개념을 사회적으로 정착시키려는 의도를 갖고 ‘민주주의적인 커뮤니티’의 형성에 주력하면서, 공(公)교육을 재생하기 위한 방안을 탐구하였다. 그런데 그가 다름 아닌 예술이 커뮤니티를 구성한다고 주장하고, 미적인 영역에 관해 자주 언급하고 있다는 사실은 매우 흥미롭다. 그가 이 물음을 예술의 측면에서 심화시켜 연구한 것이 1934년에 출판된 『경험으로서의 예술』이다.
듀이 예술론을 그의 공공성에 대한 논의와 함께 견주어 생각해 보면, 두 가지 점에서 매우 흥미롭다. 하나는 듀이가 예술을 사회나 문화 그리고 교육의 실천적인 영역과 관련지우면서 탐구하고 있다는 점이고, 다른 하나는 듀이가 예술을 인간 상호간의 경험의 장벽을 넘어서서 경험을 공유한다고 하는 '커뮤니케이션'의 관점에서 파악하고 있다는 점이다. 그는 경험의 재구축을 통하여 예술을 ‘공공적인 것’으로 파악한다고 하는 과제를 전개하였다. 듀이는 개인과 사물이나 타자나 문화와의 ‘상호작용’을 기초에 둠으로써, 사람들의 경험세계를 기반으로 한 커뮤니티의 형성을 실현하려고 하였다.
듀이는 다양한 공중의 참가에 의해, 예술의 공공성을 수립하는 방안을 탐구하였다. 그에 의하면, 예술은 ‘소통하는 관중’을 창출한다. 그것은 사람과 사람 사이를 차단하는 장애물 없는, 완전한 커뮤니케이션의 미디어이다. 듀이는 예술의 기초에 사람들의 일상경험이 있음을 인식하고, 예술을 문화와 사회 가운데에서 성숙시키려 하였다. 그는 서로의 경험세계를 함께 즐기는 커뮤니티에서 ‘공공적인 것’의 성립기반을 보았다.

This paper clarifies John Dewey's reconstruction of the aesthetic experience in light of recent studies that interpret his theory of art as being related to social and cultural issues. By focusing on Art as Experience(1934) and his other works in the 1920s and the 1930s, the following three points are indicated. Firstly, he developed his concept of art through his inquiry into the common experience shared by mankind. By criticizing art that is spiritualized out of any connection with the world of daily life, he insists that the experience of art is public and communicating since it has the potential to create community. Secondly, Dewey was critical of the nationalism and the expansion of the market mentality in the 19th century that had deprived art of the actual sense of community and helped to separate people's experiences. In contrast, his theory of art reflected the public participation of the mass culture in the 20th century. Thirdly, it is of great help to see Dewey's friendship with Albert C. Barnes. Barnes established the school that idealized Dewey's concepts of democracy and art education, though they faced many difficulties of putting their ideals into practice. It follows from these that Dewey attempted to construct a publicness founded on the aesthetic experience of the community.
