초록

이글은 최근 제시된 내재적 발전론 비판을 그것이 가진 역사인식이라는 면에서 살펴본 것이다. 이어서 내재적 발전론에 비판적인 시각을 담고 있는 연구 성과들이 조선시대사의 전체상을 구성하기 위해 좀 더 고민해야할 점들을 제시해보았다. 마지막으로 조선의 역사상을 새롭게 구축하기 위한 연구 방향을 근대중심주의에 대한 비판이라는 맥락에서 살펴보았다.
내재적 발전론에 대한 비판은 ‘발전론’ 쪽보다는 대체로 그것이 가진 내재성, 곧 일국사적 시각에 갇혀 있었다는 점에 대한 비판이 주조를 이루고 있다. 반면 내재적 발전론이 가진 근대중심주의(modernocentrism)나 발전론에 대해서는 제대로 된 비판이 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이는 무엇보다 근대중심적 역사인식에 대한 자각이 미흡하기 때문이다.
한편 내재적 발전론을 비판하는 연구들이 많이 생산되고 있다. 단편적인 사실들에 대한 실증적 연구들도 많지만, 내재적 발전론과는 다른 시각에서 조선시대를 이해하고 새로운 조선시대상을 구축하려는 의도가 깔려 있는 연구들도 적지 않다. 그러나 각자의 연구들을 조선시대의 전체적인 역사 과정과 구조 속에서 어떻게 위치 지울지, 다른 부문들과의 상호관계를 어떻게 이해할 것인지 등에 대해서는 좀 더 폭넓은 고민이 필요하다.
새로운 조선시대의 역사상을 구성하기 위해서는 무엇보다 서구중심주의와 근대중심주의에 대한 비판적 시각이 요청된다. 서구가 규정해 놓은 근대성 여부에 초점을 맞출 경우 조선사회에 대한 전체적 이해는 처음부터 차단되어버린다. 조선사회의 성격은 물론 그것이 인류사의 경험 속에서 어떤 의미를 가지는지 이해하기 위해서는 서구 중심적ㆍ근대 중심적 역사인식을 넘어서는 새로운 인식론이 요청된다. 그래야만 조선시대의 다양한 경험이나 법과 제도 등이 다만 억압되고 청산되어야 할 구닥다리 고물이 아니라, ‘근대 이후’ 혹은 ‘근대 너머’에 대한 새로운 상상력과 가능성을 만들어 나가는 자원이 될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This article examines the recent criticism of the theory of intrinsic development in terms of its historical perception. Subsequently, the research results, which contain a critical view of the theory of intrinsic development, presented more points to consider in order to form the overall image of the history of the Joseon Dynasty. Finally, the research direction to newly establish the history of Joseon was examined in the context of criticism of modernocentrism.
Criticism of the theory of intrinsic development is dominated by criticism that it was generally trapped in its an intrinsic character, or a national historical perspective, rather than the ‘development theory’. On the other hand, there is no proper criticism of the modernocentrism or development theory of the intrinsic theory of development. This is because, above all, there is a lack of awareness of moderncentric historical awareness.
Meanwhile, many studies criticizing the theory of intrinsic development are being produced. There are many empirical studies on fragmentary facts, but there are many studies aimed at understanding the Joseon Dynasty from a different perspective from the theory of intrinsic development and establishing a new historical image of the Joseon Dynasty. However, it is necessary to think more broadly about how to place each study in the overall historical process and structure of the Joseon Dynasty, and how to understand the interrelationships with other sectors.
In order to form a new historical image of the Joseon Dynasty, above all, a critical perspective on eurocentrism and modernocentrism is required. If the focus is on the modernity prescribed by the West, the overall understanding of Joseon society is blocked from the beginning. In order to understand the nature of Joseon society as well as what it means in the experience of human history, a new epistemology beyond eurocentric and modernocentric historical awareness is required. Only then can various experiences, laws, and systems of the Joseon Dynasty be a resource to create new imaginations and possibilities for “post-modern” or “over-modern” rather than just old junk that should be suppressed and liquidated.
